I assume you mean that it is not type approved on the Defender. Land Rover have offered 2" receivers on the Range Rover since at least 2007 from factory so they had to be type approved for them to sell them at that point. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

There are (as far as I know) no Defender receiver hitch fittings that have been type approved.
There may be other vehicles for which TA fittings are available, and there may be things you can stick in a 2" receiver that are type approved, but there is no type approved way to mount them on a Defender. I hope that this provides clarity! |

There a very few TA 2” receivers, the Range Rover being one (if not all) but are manufacturer specific and TA for that vehicle only. To my limited knowledge there are no aftermarket TA receivers available for any vehicle, but I stand to be corrected! |

I've had a 2" reciever on the back of mine for years, towed over 3.5 tonne no problem
when I'm not using it i just remove it and put it under back seats. nice to be able to swap between tow ball and recovery eye with ease. 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold) 2015 Discovery 4.5 Black pack Firenze red XS 2008 Corris Grey 110 XS USW (sold) 2011 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold) |

you would still be way below the weight limit for the receiver. As a Yank that is mainly what we use until a 5th wheel. I've just came back from towing two defenders @ or above 90 mph for 10 hours so yeah, you should be fine. |

Thanks, I guess it’s no different in strength to a Dixon bate with a single pin drop plate which i currently have.

I think the pin is slightly thinner than the Dixon bate pin.

I’ve looked at 2” receivers before, and the always got bogged in the type approval/tax class thing. So I searched and read a few more threads today and found this above. I don’t actually know what my V5 says, but it might be irrelevant anyway! My car is a 1994, base spec 110 SW - first sold to a local airport fire brigade. Does the fact that it’s 1994 mean I don’t need to worry about type approval, and could legally tow my boat trailer (about 1.2T)? I know, legal advice from a Defende forum… but you know what I mean! Yes, yours pre-dates the need for any type approval. Darren

Thanks Darren, more stuff I’d read was bringing me closer and closer to that conclusion, but it’s good to get it supported.

How do people find it with towing 3.5 tonnes? I can legally fit one, just looking at options for the farm as we have a few hook and loops and some nato hitch things

I've regularly towed up to 3.5 tonnes on mine without any problems at all.
How do I find it? I look at the rear crossmember and there it is, nestling just underneath! (Sorry, couldn't resist that one). |

Not had any worries about having a weight up behind when using the 2inch receiver. Everything is still sound.
I know of a Chinese ebay special drop hitch that has started to fail, Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest |
