Apparently my 2003 TD5 90 has sprang a small leak from the gas tank... Do you have any suggestion on what are my options? Do you know how much is a new tank?

I'll have to check as it is all dirty down there... It's a small leak but it does leave a stain on the floor of diesel.

It would be unusual for it to be the tank itself, it is far more common that a hose connected to the tank ot a fitting in the tank is the source of the leak.
Whilst it is not unheard of for a plastic tank to leak it is unusual. |

its most probably the fuel breather pipe thats perished. did one on Tuesday - 3hrs. Cheers

My 110 TD5 has a slow fuel drip.
This has been diagnosed by different garages as either the fuel tank breather or the fuel filter head becoming porous. The fuel filter housing was replaced a couple of years ago with a Gore unit and I therefore think that this is not where the fuel leak is coming from. Obviously to look at and possibly replace the breather pipe is going to need the tank removed along with the prop etc, etc! Does anyone have any idea of roughly how many hours the work would take? |

If its a 110 its a doddle compared to a 90 most time will be spent removing towbar stays and anti roll bar mounts if they havent been off in a while. If you only need to change the breather hose it can be accessed by just dropping the tank at the left side enough to get your hand in. Probably 2.5 hrs at the most if you keep the fuel level down to minimum. Maybe worth getting a galvanised tank cradle for refitting the tank

Well my 110 TD5 went to the garage today and the verdict is that the tank needs replacement. The rear near side is cracked on the top near the sender.
I’m currently looking on eBay for a second hand one because a new one is the best part of £700!  |

Spares parts prices are extortion since LR was bought by Tata.
They obviously think we are all rich Range Rover owners who don't even find out (or care) how much their car repairs cost. |

Well I found one on eBay at a much more reasonable ÂŁ150!
It’s not just JLR/Tata who have overpriced spares! There was a BMW Mini in the workshop that was having a couple of fuel hoses replaced; the connector on the end of one had failed and had been roughly repaired by a breakdown service. The mechanic asked me to guess what the new pipes cost and I said “About £60”. In fact they cost £300! |

It makes a bulkhead at ÂŁ5700 or a seat box at ÂŁ2200 seem quite resonable  |

The extortion predates TATA, the prices for parts rocketed when Caterpillar won the distribution contract from Unipart.
I'm not usually slow to criticise JLR but in this instance I'm not sure that it is the villain of the piece, I think a lot is down to the distribution contractor. Mind you, JLR awarded them the contract. |

An additional rant!
I mentioned earlier that the garage that carried out the service advised that the fuel filter housing was leaking and suggested that it had become porous. When I investigated I found that the filter was loose and looked old. I strongly suspect that the fuel filter wasn’t changed. I’ve looked at the invoice and it doesn’t itemise the filters and just says filter kit. I have emailed the garage for their comments- I wonder if they will reply? |
