Engine Rebuild
I'm looking at replacing the pistons on my 2.2 Puma. (Suspected cracked piston from a faulty injector), does anyone know if a rebuild is possible by leaving the block in place and just stripping the sump and head?

Weight and space are my main concerns with removing the engine/gearbox. If its not possible, does anyone have advice around removing the engine i.e was the box left attached or removed first, did the engine drop out underneath or up through the engine bay?

Thanks.

Disconnect from gear box, leave gearbox in situ, supported on a jack to keep balance.
Lift engine up pull forward and out through the top.
Reverse to refit, sounds easy.

I don't believe that it is possible with the engine in situ due to the need to remove the ladder frame from the bottom of the block, but even if it is possible I suspect that the convenience of working on the engine out of the vehicle compared to the inconvenience of working on it in the vehicle would rapidly make you wish that you had removed it.

Thanks for the replies. At least I know the direction to head in now.

I bought a simple engine lifter (including a balancer) in 2017 from eBay when my connecting rod bearings failed. It can lift 500 kg in the outermost position which is quite enough.

I need to lift up (or better tilt) the gearbox with a second lifter und place it later with a peace of wood on the frame. Then bring the engine in balance and move it out.

Don’t forget to change the spigot bearing and maybe the clutch as well.

When you reinstall the engine, do it without the water pump, if you have left the servo pump inside. Otherwise the space is much more restricted then it must be.

Good luck!
