Are there any specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) that have been recorded, if so post here. That will help localise the problem.
Also can you provide more specific details about it not restarting. I.e Does the starter motor run but engine not fire up etc |

I haven't been able to get any specific codes. It does say "No codes are stored in the module" and I don't know how to load them. The Auto web site doesn't list the Autolink AL319 for anything, including an instruction manual so I guess it's too old to be supported.
Out of 10 starting attempts eight will turn the starter motor but not fire up. The other two it will just make clicks noises and do nothing. |

On the first point, just plugging it in and it auto linking to your ECU’s should auto load any DTC’s. On second point. Check the coolant level. The Puma engine has a built in safety thing where it won't run or it cuts out if the temperature reaches a certain level. Something must be triggering your safety cut off. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

All suggested options checked with no improvement. Booked in with Evans Motorcraft who have latest diagnosis kit. I will advise the outcome...

I had a warm start issue. Cleaning the contacts of the CHT sensor fixed this for me.

The clicking does sound like grounding issues or battery terminals similar to as JST suggested.

System analysis resulted in:
P253F-00 Engine oil deteriorated. Cause (possibly) a very hot day in full sunshine, temperature 35C+ silver vehicle with black wing panels. Engine bay/engine heating to ambient temperature and vehicle driven 500 metres between shut downs (setting up marshalling points for charity run) engine generating heat and radiator fan having no chance to cool due to short run duration. U3006-16 Control Module Input Power A OBDII Codes ($03) OBDII Permanent Coces ($0A) No conclusion from these except that if it happens again don't use my amateur OBD (which resets the fault codes) but go straight to professionally equipped technicians for analysis (Martyn Evans - Evans Motorcraft - Taunton 0788 444 8469 much recommended). Alternative theory is that when shutting down, after ignition key shut down, lock down with the key fob immobiliser. Otherwise the immobiliser system is thinking that the vehicle is being stolen and immobilising it. Unlocking the vehicle via the key fob may allow the engine to be started. As the fault is so rare (once a year) I have yet to try this. Thanks to all that made suggestions to the problem. I hope that the above enables you to assist someone you hear of with the same problem in the future. |
