Swap out 2.4 and replace with 2.2
Good morning I wondering if anyone can help with their knowledge.
My 2.4 TDCI has decided its no longer wanting to work. Now I have a few options recon the 2.4 engine M57 Bmw (worried it will de value it) or put a 2.2 engine in as there is alot lower mileage ones about.
Question is will this go in my 2007 defender in replacement and what parts are required obviously im going to require the ecu from a 2.2 and the engine loom but what other issues am I going to encounter

I stand to be corrected, but I believe that the enlarged DPF/Cat Combo pack fitted to the 2.2 lead to a bigger ridge/bump in the exhaust tunnel.

That and the DPF light on the dash that's not on the 2.4 instrument cluster (both assuming your going to fit the DPF/Cat pack)

Have you considered the 5 cylinder 3.2 TDCi Transit/Ranger unit ? Zaid-M

I think the 2.2 uses a different CAN protocol to 2.4 as it's a TATA product rather than Ford-JLR.

Found this when making GM LS3 engines interface with the Puma instrument cluster on some conversions a few years ago.

Lots of hassle to be honest if you want to do a full conversion to 2.2 spec the bulkhead RH footwell would need to be modified to clear the larger DPF/Cat assembly. Unless you are chasing later emission compliance would be much more cost effective to fit a replacement 2.4 or M57. M57 not everyones cup of tea but very popular so once you find the right person probably would increase value. Just be careful choosing a good donor M57 as though they are far longer lasting than the Puma engines they arent quite as faultless as some people would have you believe.

A fresh 2.4 would be my choice. The cost of messing around fitting something different would get you a lovely 2.4 with all new hoses, clutch, map, exhaust and intercooler. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

You'd need to change the tank sender to one with a fuel pump as well. The only good news is the one with the pump is cheaper than the one without the pump. Go figure!

After all the hassle you would end up with an inferior engine with a less-suitable torque curve. Whistle

Thank you for all the replies just as I thought it seems alot more hassle. I am keen on the M57 but that also seems alot of messing around to find the right bits. Think I need to go down the route of a recon 2.4 and swap all ancillaries over. My current engine has all new injectors which have literally only had a start up so that a less cost. So probably a new turbo and and a few other bits and It shoud be an easier option.

Biggest issues is finding a trusted supplier of the recon engine. The internet is full of websites but you just dont know what your going to get

Depends if its a keeper and what you are going to use it for really, M57 is a far superior power unit if a lot older and the parts arent too complicated if you retain the m82 box. It would be a lot nicer drive with a longer life span if a good engine is sourced.

Definitely a keeper. Like you say M57 is the one for power its just the sourcing the decent engine and getting all the bits to mate it up. I would be keeping it with the 6 speed manual

It should work, but you need at least a different ECU, a pump in the tank, a DPF, a different display unit and maybe something more I don’t remember.

For an engine swap id only buy a running BMW and drive it around for a while I’d never buy an engine that’s been taken out, i looked at m57s if my td5 died, however the cost is easily double a recon engine to make it nearly factory standard.
