Goodbye Discovery hello Defender
After 14 years of relatively trouble free motoring it was time to say goodbye to my 2002 Series II Discovery, it’s demise being brought about by a severe and dramatic hail storm that destroyed its bodywork beyond reasonable repair (think being attacked by a large hammer on every body panel!).
This event has brought me to my next chapter in Land Rover ownership and so have said hello to a 2012 Defender 90, a “car” I have always admired but never been brave enough to buy, and so with the arrival of one at my local dealership it was time to take the plunge.
This is where this forum is going to be invaluable to me as I know very little about it and it’s various and numerous foibles. Some of what I have seen makes scary reading but am enthused to both embrace and enter the steep learning curve that comes with ownership. You will have to forgive me if my later posts and questions seem trivial but they will come from a zero knowledge base.

Welcome, and Congratulation on your new beautiful Defender 90.
I have found this forum invaluable, with polite, kind, helpful and knowlegable members.

I went from a SAAB 93 Coupe 2.3 turbo, to my 2014 Defender 110
I miss the 300 BHP, the superbe ergonomics and confortable seats. on the Coupe
The Defender, I love the high driving position, the relaxed pace of travel and the "spirit of ownership" that every owner shares.
Enjoy Very Happy Zaid-M

Thank you.
Looking forward to a first long drive in it this weekend when we are returning to the UK to see family. Probably it will not be as comfortable as when we travel in the Honda and, as you say, it may take a little longer than before but that is not necessarily a bad thing so the Gendarme can have a day off!

I actually find the Puma seats really comfortable in the front - I’ve done a long journey with no issues.

Enjoy the different pace of driving life with a Defender- also, don’t forget to wave at fellow Defender drivers, 9/10 you’ll get a wave back or be waved at first. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

I do not blame you for thinking that way, but keep in mind that most here comment about their issues and trying to get help in resolving their problems.

Very happy to acknowledge fellow Defender drivers, as it will be from the left hand seat I am encouraging my wife, who will be sitting in the right hand seat, to do likewise….something she seems keen to do!
I was discussing security upgrades with my local LR garage, following reading about forum members experiences, and they could not understand why this was necessary. Where I live you see Defenders in the vineyards and as vehicles used to go to boar hunts but generally they are not used as everyday transport, my garage could not comprehend why anyone would want to steal it or parts from it! However, taking on board the forums advice, and as I spend long periods in the UK, I have invested in a pair of Optimill bonnet hinges and will collect them this weekend. Other security upgrades may well follow.
I am reassured that any problems I may have in the future will be resolvable through the extensive knowledge of the members of the forum.

Just remember that these forums are mainly used for fault finding - people don’t come on here and start threads about how reliable their Defender has been. So just be mindful that what your reading is just the issues - these vehicles have taken people all around the world. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Ive had mine 10yrs and love it to bits, I made a point of changing out all the known weak spots before they failed with upgraded replacement parts.

It makes me grin every time I drive it, not sure what it is like where you live but consider security upgrades, got to be the number 1 thing to do in the UK DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

love the colour! I was keeping my eye one in the same colour as a replacement for my 300 TDi, ended up going black. Laughing Another one in similar spec turned up and cheaper. Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

The Disco was a great car (my wife and I drove it to our wedding) sadly it’s demise was brought about by mother nature …….. although I don’t miss the numerous oil leaks it suffered during its lifetime!

Not wanting to be controversial but it’s a shame that stylistically LR have stopped making cars like the pre 2016 Discovery and Defender.
