TD5 interiors lights fuse keeps blowing
Hi all,

My TD5 has a roof console with two lights and a USB charger. Recently the 10A fuse keeps blowing (also taking out radio) and I’m struggling to trace the issue.

I believe the roof wiring has the following:
Permanent live
Permanent ground
Switched ground

With the two interior lights and the USB charger unplugged the fuse doesn’t blow.

However, when reconnected it blows.

I’m trying to figure out if it’s blowing due to the switched ground or permanent ground. Any easy way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

I’m starting to think that the heat over the last few days has caused this.
I’ve taken the roof console down and have insulated all the wiring and the back plates of the interior lights in case they were grounding out on something 🤷‍♂️

If anyone has any ideas?

Am also thinking two old school bulbs and a USB charger is drawing too much current? But surely not 10a???

Work through the problem step by step.

Does the fuse blow the moment you reconnect the console? If so the usb module may be faulty or you have a short in the console.
Check out the console with a multimeter .

Does the fuse blow only when the lights come on?
Does the fuse only blow when you plug something into the USB port?
This may identify the bit of the console with a fault.

Try to find the power draw from the console from manufacturers web site. This will let you check the suitability of the fused circuit.

Electrical problems are frustrating, you just have to work through and test.

Check all the wiring in the A pillar very carefully. It is easy to pinch a wire when reattaching the trim piece and cause a short, hence the fuse blowing...ask me how I know!
