Yes the switch is separate from the key barrel/column lock.

Try the relay bridge wire though Smile  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
2015 D90 XS SW

Have a look at the bottom of page 10 of this topic https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic47486-135.html a new technique from bradders130 to get the switch element off the ignition without drilling
