How safe is the new Defender...
Very safe it would seem, here's a video from Florida showing how the new Defender holds up after a pretty horrific accident. I'm only posting this as the reports are that the husband and wife occupants walked away without a scratch Shocked

The link won't work to the point in the video it happens so just fast forward to 2.42 Thumbs Up Cheers Ian

Holy crap…….

Glad and amazed that they were ok.

Hopefully the powers that be see it as a unique accident as I know in the US that it has been published a number of times about the Jeep Wrangler models flipping in a test environment.

Though clearly I know which vehicle I would rather be in.

Not even worth thinking of the outcome if that was a Defender Classique……..I’m off to kiss my roll cage….

Wow, that is pretty incredible - would hate to have seen the results if it were the "old" Defender.

The Mazda must have been crossing lanes rapidly for that much energy to be imparted and cause such air time. Stuart

There's another view from the Truck's dash cam. In that one, you can clearly see that the little car/suv hit the Defender behind the left rear wheel. Forgot what it's called, but it's a classic way for law enforcement to "spin out" a vehicle. Once the Defender spun sideways at 60-70mph, it then started to roll. Surprisingly, both drivers (and a passenger in the Defender) walked away from the accident.

The video stream has been copied so many times it is MUCH worse, but you can see the basics.

What a testament to the strength of the passenger cell.
I believe the Mazda inadvertently did a ‘pit maneuver.’
Although the Mazda’s fault, it’s not wise to be undertaking, and at such a rate of speed relative to traffic. 22MY Defender 110 D300 S in Pangea Green and Contrast White Roof

Agreed, but it’s legal in the States to pass on either side and collisions and near miss incidents like this are quite common. But passing at speed, possibly above the speed limit in this case, at a junction was a contributory factor.

No, it's not legal to pass on the right side in the US. That was in Florida which specifically has rules in place to say it's a No No, but it was in a part of Florida that gets a LOT of tourists and most traffic rules are obeyed as much as they are in Italy. That portion of the highway, the speed limit drops to 50 mph. The first video shows the driver at 68. The Defender was likely going 75+ which makes it "reckless driving" in the States. So speeding, reckless driving, passing on the right - most traffic judges would convict both of them as "at fault" and they would each have to pay their own damages.

Nuclear Nick - oh, you probably saw it happen a LOT. Traffic laws are not as well enforced as they once were and, worse, people ignore them more! There's a vast chasm between what is legal and what is commonplace. Most interstates, the Speed Limit is intended to be an upper bounds, but actually are a lower bounds. Driving on the right happens all the time and when there's an accident, the driver is usually shocked that they got a citation.
