Engine light and no response from throttle pedal.
Hi all.

My truck is continuing its expensive hissy fit.
Jumped in the other day fired her up and had an eml and pressing the accelerator was completely dead. Just sat idling. Turned it off and on again then it was fine.

Drove to wales, then the same thing happened mid drive, light came on and no response from throttle pedal. Sits at idle until restarted. Happened about 4 times during the trip.

No faults being logged on the nanocom.

What do you think? I have recently done a clutch and flywheel change but I don’t think that will cause anything related.

The two possibilities I’m thinking are the crank sensor (maybe got damaged during the clutch change) or the accelerator pedal is on the way out. I’m off on a big trip at the end of this month so it’s a bit of a panic to get it fixed up. I always carry spare crank sensors and an ecu just in case, but thinking of finding a throttle pedal too.

I may change the crank sensor anyway in the meantime as I have a couple of spares. Just to rule that out.

Anyone had something similar?

These symptoms are typically indicative of the pedal failing or an issue with the pedal wiring.

Mine's doing the same - I know it's wiring related in my case 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

Hi thanks for the reply. How did you identify the fault as a wiring fault not a pedal fault? Have you already tried changing the pedal?

My 110 has had a td5 swap (originally 200tdi) and I had to splice the throttle pedal wiring - giving it a wiggle clears the issue for me!! 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

Had the same problem a few months back. Swapped out pedal for new one from Rimmer Bros and problem solved no further issues. Pedal is a bit pricy but worth the peace of mind. Pretty easy to swap out too,

Spicing in a temporary loom from the pedal to the ECU is not a difficult thing to do. Best option is a length of trailer multicore fed from the pedal, along the chassis rail and in to the ECU box. Cut and solder according to the wiring diagram. If it is the wiring the problem will be sorted, if the pedal then not.

The other way is to borrow a known pedal from a mate or local forum member. If I lived near you, you could have tried Miffy's.


Very irritating problem, especially when stuck on the side of a road.

I had more or less the same problem. It came suddenly and not often.

I cleaned the black connector at the ecu and no problems since. Roel

Thanks for the replies all.

Ive changed the crank sensor as i had a spare genuine one in the cupboard, because this problem has only occured since i changed the clutch and flywheel and ive cleaned the black plug of the ecu as i was fiddling around with ecu not so long ago.

I think if i get the fault again i'll first change the wiring to the pedal, then if this doesnt cure it finally the pedal for cost reasons doing the pedal last. The annoying thing is its fine 97% of the time and has only glitched a handful of times.

Only thing is im off to the alps in it at the end of the month so this is rather unfortunate timing.

When I had a very similar fault, I logged all the pedal voltages using the nanocom and it became pretty obvious. I also had a driver demand fault.

I need to try doing this with my nanocom.

The only odd thing with mine is its normally on startup, has happened like this 3 times. It happened once while the car was idling while I opened a gate and only once while driving and using the throttle.

Mine was mostly a startup issue. The voltage issues would not necessarily trigger an engine light.

No I ran a terrible bit of cable from inside the dash to next to the ECU

A quick update, i thought the crank sensor had sorted it, i had been on around 15 journeys no issues but today it came back on startup again. It seems 90% of the time it happens on startup. I think im going to buy a plug for the throttle pedal, some 7 core with and ecu pins to take with me on my alps trip in a couple of weeks, in case it is a wiring issue.

So I changed the wiring before I went on holiday. Managed to go to the alps and back and had no problems. Did carry a throttle pedal just in case but wasn’t needed.
