Definitely ‘off topic’ - though I will be in my Defender.
We’ll be heading for France next weekend - Plymouth to Roscoff. Because I’m near Inverness it’s a long trip to get so far south and I’m planning to break it into manageable chunks. Sailing Sunday night (9pm latest check in) and spending Saturday night in a campsite south of Taunton. So, a fairly slow day on Sunday - only 70 miles or so. For those who know the area, any good things to do in that neck of the woods on a Sunday? We’ll have had a couple of long days in the saddle to get that far, so not really looking for additional driving. We’ll have a couple of folding road bikes. If there’s no “must do’s” then I’m happy to have a slow day, but just wondering if there’s anything that would be recommended by folk who know the area. Thanks. As a "local", ( pitched up for a couple of years in '98 and still here) I can endorse both of the above suggestions, particularly Dartmouth, Slapton, Strete.
As a third idea, as you are camping south of Taunton (Cornish Farm or Hollybush Park perhaps?) you may be close to Blackdown Hills AONB where there are multiple lightly trafficked single track lanes & C roads suitable for leisure riding on folding bikes, great views and village pubs for Sunday lunch before heading for your ferry. A303/A30 or M5 are pretty much equal distance from Blackdowns to Exeter, then south to Plymouth. Hope you have a great holiday, but be aware, the M5 between Bristol /Taunton /Exeter is a complete pain in the arse both ways during the day on holiday Saturdays. You might find low box useful! Keep it simple - poverty spec. |

Hi folks,
Thanks very much indeed for the suggestions. I guess weather will play a part - if it’s sunny like in those pics, that southern route could be the one. I did wonder about going more north around Dartmoor - but on the other hand, moorland scenery is pretty much what I always live with. Inverness to Skye today, for example. We’re staying in a place called Kingsmead, near Clayhildon. A more basic, low-frills kind of place, which is more our style. I think it’s right on the edge of the AONB. Not good news about the M5… The nearest I get to motorways are normally the M9 and M8, and less often the M74. It’s a couple of years at least since I was on the M5 and that was a rainy Saturday, just out of lockdown.
