Hi,
I'm currently doing a V8 conversion on my 90 with a new galv V8 chassis and Def V8 R380. Previously the transfer box was mounted on the 4cyl/200tdi brackets, standalone from the gearbox crossmember. Now the V8 drivetrain is fitted using the 300tdi/Td5 gearbox mounts (integrated into the crossmember), the gbox & tbox sit roughly 2" further forward than they used to with the 4cyl/200tdi mounts. I know this means I'll need to change the gearbox tunnel but what does it mean for prop shafts? The front prop is now too long but I've measured them up and to me it looks like I could swap the front prop shaft with the rear (the 2" I've lost at the front is gained at the rear by the tbox moving forwards)? It looks to me like it would work and save buying any different ones, has anyone done this before or know of any reason this wouldn't work? Cheers, Matt. I wondered about the same when I went from LT77 200tdi to V8 R380 as well! From memory the rear prop is about 9cm longer (61cm vs 70cm closed lengths).
You'll need to modify the seat box by the handbrake to accommodate the transfer box. I took a complete Disco 1 V8 as a donor using the engine, gearbox, mounts, exhaust Y piece etc etc etc off it. Saved a bag of pain and cash. JB @Lodelaner Instagram Youtube greenlaning and other LR related content |

I’m just about to ditch my r380 for an auto. Just don’t get on with behind the v8. Worth a thought…

Thanks, currently looking through exhaust options - your 90 is very much the inspiration for the V8 swap and eventually soft top conversion! I've done a fair bit of measuring now and I don't think it's going to work - plus I need new UJs which is about £30 per prop and I can get the entire prop with UJs off Paddocks for roughly £80 each. I think the parts I need are: FRC8386 - front FRC8393 - rear
Cheers but I've just sunk a lot of pennies into a new R380 with Ashcroft, won't be doing too many miles and I like the idea of an old V8 and manual box Matt. '89 90 CSW with a 3.5 V8 conversion (WIP) - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic46809.html |
