Potential faulty MAF sensor
Hi all,

I have an intermittent problem; Sometimes when I start my defender up there is no power and even when not in gear cant get revs high (dont have a rev count but i would guess maybe 2500?), this will last for about 15 seconds.

The other occasion a fault occurs is on a steep incline, although much rarer, even after driving the car for half an hour, reaching maybe a 25% incline and the revs just start to drop.

From other forums and posts, the maf seems like the likely culprit but its not conclusive, Can anyone impart some wisdom?

The easiest way to check if it is the maf sensor is to unplug it and drive round with it disconnected. The ECU will resort to a default calculation instead of the measured value. If it drives fine then look to replace the MAF, if it still occurs then you’ll have to dig a bit further.

great, I will have a go now. Will this have any negative effect? As it is only an intermittent problem I may have to have it unplugged for a while circa. 1 month to be able to be sure?

No it will hopefully fly in comparsion. Had a miss on my TD5 and oil from the performance filter was coating the MAF sensor. When I disconnected it was sooooo different.
