A 5 or 600 Holley with a cam, a bit of headwork & some pipes would work wonders for that engine.
"Nothing like a V8", as we say in Aussie, good luck with your "re-power", I shall be watching your progress with interest, & guarantee that upon the first drive with 8 cylinders, an unpreventable smile will appear upon your face! Pickles. |

Another weekend, another update
Finished up the block cleaning and installed new core plugs: Click image to enlarge Then put the crankshaft in with new shells and rear seal, all installed with assembly lube. Then the arduous task of cleaning up the pistons, installing the new rings and big end bearings before spending half an hour per cylinder cursing profusely at those poxy piston ring compressors Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Next up: the camshaft. Quite surprised the valves even opened on the old cam looking at the state of the lobes Click image to enlarge Setting the timing - ridiculously easy on these engines, I assumed I must be missing something Click image to enlarge Finally, spent some time cleaning up the sump and giving it a quick lick of paint. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Looking to get the timing cover and mating faces cleaned up this week, then get the sump on and can start thinking about the top end. Matt. Another long overdue update...
Engine refurb is complete bar the Edelbrock carb and manifold which I have but still need to fit. Spent a little while tarting up the rocker covers: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Attention then turned to the old chassis/running gear - I've gone down a bit of an unorthodox rebuild route simply because of space/current living arrangements which means I started with a double axle amputation as below: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Which I've since stripped and rebuilt, many hours with a wire wheel but no real issues: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge My new Shielder V8 chassis has also arrived recently, great service again from them Click image to enlarge Also some shine new bits from Ashcroft - a new R380 and LT230 with a V8 bellhousing, not a cheap trip Click image to enlarge The plan now is to get this all home, bolt my shiny new axles to my shiny new chassis (once painted) and then chuck the engine and gearbox on for a full rolling chassis. Then just the simple task of transposing the bodywork from one chassis to the other... Also need to figure out all the ancillaries/requirements to finish off the V8 conversion, I'm aiming for a completely factory V8 setup so hopefully it should just all be 'off-the-shelf' parts for things like alternator bracket etc. Lots of work ahead but dialling up the heat on this project to hopefully have it back on the road for end of July ish Matt. Big update Lots of progress in the last 2 weeks
Got the engine and axles back to HQ: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Painted the new galv chassis with Buzzweld GIO, and tarted up the various suspension/steering arms, new bushes pressed in: Click image to enlarge Then on went the front and rear axle assemblies, all reasonably easy when you've got full open access around the chassis. Had the usual fight with the bushes on the front shock absorber though, horrible things Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Then bolted the clutch on and mated the transmission up to the engine, ready to drop into the chassis. Which is when the fun began Lifted it in but with the gearbox mounts engaged in the holes, the engine mounts were roughly 2" short Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Bit of research I found that the 4cyl/200tdi transmission mounts I was using cause the transfer box to sit 2" further back and I needed the 300tdi/V8/Td5 gearbox crossmember with integrated gearbox mount points. Managed to get hold of the bits I need, swapped em out and problem solved Click image to enlarge Then spent some time finishing up bits of the engine: oil pump, valley gasket, rocker cover gaskets, inlet manifold and then showed up the Edelbrock carb to see how it's looking: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Still got the axle brake lines to do but began making a bracket for the rear axle pipework: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge In for a trial fit then painting: Click image to enlarge Plenty more tinkering to do but next big job to tackle is painting the new galvanised bulkhead and installing that, then attention can turn to wiring looms, finishing brake/clutch lines, fuel systems etc Still targeting mid/late July completion! Cheers all
More progress this week, got the new galvanised bulkhead painted with a primer coat and then arles blue over the top - nothing fancy, just using a compressor sprayer gun but the finish looks pretty good. Gave the wolfs a new coat of hammerite and put some part-worn Cooper mud terrains on - they're maybe a little bigger/wider than I really want but got them from a family member who was after a more road-friendly setup and I can always swap them at another time if they're too much. Anyway, out into the sun for a few pics now it's a proper rolling chassis Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Suddenly mid-july completion is looking quite plausible Matt.
