You are obviously a modern style driver using the brakes far too often this melting the plastic lens
Try the old school method of anticipation and gears to slow, brakes to stop. Those bulbs are 5W for side lights and 21W for brake light. So you can have total of 26W going through. Can generate quite some heat. But ensure that they have been mounted the right way (the bayonet pins are not symmetrial), as if they are incorrectly fitted (trust me can be done), you have 21W side lights and 5W brake light.
Side lights are on for a longer period of time than brake lights. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

i had a look at the rear lights, to double check the lights bulbs as mentioned, and they are in the correct way. I am suspecting that the plastic lens are poor quality, these were bearmach i have swopped these to wipac or what ever these are called. They seem a better quality. OEM parts always, if possible - also do you sit for long periods with the footbrake applied rather than using the handbrake, say in traffic. There is obviously a heat build up, and no cooling from any airflow Retired from the day job and now self employed - what a life!!

Something that has been niggling away at the back of my mind since this thread was first posted is that there are differences in the lamp housings from 300tdi onwards and either the lens body or lamp holder that clips into it are different depths depending on if it is designed for a 5W marker light or a 21W stop/indicator light. It's been a while since I have touched my lamps so can't quite remember exact details, but is it possible that the lamp fittings have been mixed up so that the stop lamp is now sitting too close to the lens?

Aren’t the bayonet pins on the stop/indicator lamp a bit offset? There are also 2 positive connections on that while the side light only has one positive connection. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
