If air got inside the hydraulic system, then you will need to bleed it.
By the look of it, it looks like the slave cylinder has failed, which on the puma is an integral part of the release bearing assembly. In turn that means it is either a transmission or engine out. I think on the puma, a gearbox out procedure is more easy than engine out. Have you checked that there is no hydraulic oil in the footwell, inside the cab? Hi Match0020
The oily stain on the second picture at the front underside of the gearbox is more than likely clutch fluid especially if you've also got a soft clutch and no fluid in the reservoir. As Dinnu has said that will be a failed slave cylinder. If changing the slave cylinder then its transfer case out and gearbox off the back of the engine. With gearbox off also consider changing the clutch (depending on condition) and have a look at the condition of the gearbox / transfer case adaptor shaft too. Lots of threads / info around on this forum. Andy |

Hi Dinnu, Thanks for your comment. I haven't check the footwell yet, is it the footwell under the driver seat or the back seat? |

Hi piechipsandpeas, Thanks for your comment. is it mean i have to change the slave cylinder? can i just changing the slave cylinder without touching the transfer case and gearbox? |

Unfortunately the slave cylinder is located within the bell housing of the gearbox and slides over the gearbox input shaft

No, the slave cylinder is coaxial with the primary pinion shaft and is located within the gearbox bell-housing. The gearbox and transfer box must be removed from the vehicle to allow access to the clutch slave cylinder.
There is one benefit to this, however, and that is that it affords the perfect opportunity to check the condition of the output adaptor shaft coupling which is a notorious failure point and spectacular design weakness of the Ford-engined Defender. |

thanks guys.
Then I may need to find the professional to do that just wondering how can I do the bleeding if the slave cylinder is inside bell-housing ? |

By footwell I mean right underneath the clutch pedal. Ensure that it is dry under the carpets and as if the master cylinder is leaking, the hydraulic fluid will end up under the carpets. The hydraulic fluid, which is a dot 4 fluid is corrosive.
The bleed nipple is led outside of the bell housing. It is located on the left side of the bellhousing. This thread might help: https://www.defender2.net/forum/post376716.html 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

It is likely the slave failed, you will need a new clutch and slave as a minimum as transfer box and gearbox has to come out to change the slave. By this stage you may as well fit a new pressure plate and friction plate and as per Blackwood’s suggestion at least check and grease it.
Like me you will need someone else to have a look at it. Slave cylinders and common to go on Pumas, some have really good luck others don’t. I’ve found the slave to be more problematic than wearing clutches out. I guess age related.. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

I was gonna put that on mine deliberately the other day, but it just so happens it’s gone and posted in accidentally.
Any chance you could change username to it? $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 Last edited by custom90 on 15th May 2022 8:41pm. Edited 1 time in total |
