Rust and mud, the joys of working under a land Rover Very Happy

I have finally started on a few external functional/cosmetic upgrades, the first of which was to fit a set of tree sliders from Terrafirma. I wanted to remove the existing sills and side steps without getting all "medieval" which proved somewhat challenging, despite liberal doses of WD40 in the preceding week. However I was victorious.

Fitting the supports into the jacking points was a significant challenge and I would recommend investing in some sort of wire brush with a long shaft that could be fitted to a drill so that the any internal crud can be removed. I had not Sad and had to scrape, insert, twist and remove repeatedly until they were inserted correctly, as always having the correct tool would have saved loads of time. Also bunged in a decent amount of lithium grease.

The final bolt up proved straight forward and very satisfying, and I think they look rather good Smile

Snap ! - Red is probably the best colour for a Defender ! (but I am a bit biased !)

Did the same thing on the bigger version of yours !
not so dirty underneath but still took a bit of gumption to get right

Agree on the colour Laughing , and a quick question if you don't mind.

Are those BF Goodrich's on standard boost alloys with spacers and if so what size and any advice?

I ask as that is the next mod on mine. 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX Type R STi V5

Hi Marcus
They are indeed BFG ATR K2 235/85/16 on standard boosts with no spacers .. I had spacers when I bought the vehicle and took them off as I have a heavy load and am aways doing long miles and overland trips ... just removed a possible/potential issue.

The boosts and ATR’s look very good (in my opinion) and the vehicle drives nicely with the current set up

Thumbs Up

The Red Defender or Derek as it has now been christened almost kept a clean sheet during the summer, but it had a tantrum on Sainsburys carpark when it decided the ignition key was non-functional. The RAC diagnosis was to employ brute force to get it started so it was able to make it to our local garage who replaced the ignition barrel.

Cosmetically it now wears a TerraFirma steering guard which was very straight forward too fit, whilst I was under there, I fitted a new steering damper as it was probably original (140000 miles), and they don't cost much.

Looking good I think Very Happy You may spot that the wheels look spaced out, now that is not such a happy story. Quick test drive and the wobbles set in at about 60 mph, investigation showed that all though they were hub centric spacers from a reputable brand, there was play between the spacer and the hub, so to successfully centre them would be nigh on impossible and the loads in turn would not be passed into the hub correctly. They have been junked and I am currently seeking a refund form the vendor.

And yes, once removed the wobbles vanished.

I have now decided that the correct path is to fit a wheel with the offset that I want to get the correct wheel fitment. 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX Type R STi V5

LED Lights (not headlamps)
The latest upgrade is a set of LED lights (not head lamps). After an indicator failed and the root cause was traced to corroded pins that had broken off in the connector, after some research I went with a set of WIPAC 73mm Smoked LED Light Kit & 95mm Fog & Reverse and RDX LED DARK side repeaters.

The only dilemma when fitting was figuring out the layout of the relays as part of the kit includes a new relay for the indicators. If it is of any help to anybody here is a pic of the layout under the dash for a 2010 van with the indicator relay circled. Note I did not need to adjust the blink speed.

Fitting was incredibly straight forward for all the lights, except the number plate light where I needed the soldering iron and some wire heat shrink sleeves.
