sump plug leak
Hi,
Really silly simple question

About the only time I've not seen oil leaking from the sump plug on my td5 was when a local garage did an oil change for me.

Draining the oil for the next change involved a breaker bar ....with a length of pipe on it to undo the damn thing!

When i do a change I anneal the copper washer and start by tightening up to the haynes manual recommended 23 nm ... and it leaks ... had it up to 40nm still leaks

So whats the solution? Really twitchy about the gorilla approach.

Have tried PTFE tape as well to no avail

Make sure the threads in the sump or on the plug aren’t damaged then. It’s quite possible to damage them by over tightening. Charlie

replace sump?

If it’s been over tightened to the point you need pipe over a breaker bar then it’s likely that the threads have been damaged either one or both of the plug and sump.

New sump plug is an easy thing to change, if it is the sump then you could probably find a decent second hand one at a reasonable price. A new sump is very expensive.

Rightly or wrongly, I always use blue hylomar to help the sealing as well as a new copper washer.

I’d just try and find a good secondhand sump. They’re around the £50-60 mark on eBay. Charlie

I would try fitting a Femco quick drain plug That way if it works ok, then you won’t have to disturb it next oil change.

I use silicon sealant. I don't know how you call it in englisch. The head gasket stuff.
It seals good and stick so you don't need to overtighten it without the fear of loosing the plug. Roel
