Those pistons are unserviceable anyway so I would say a new pair of calipers would be your best bet.
Yes unbolt it all, remove the pipe and refitting is the reverse of removal, plus bleeding the brakes. You will need a good fitting bi-hex socket for the bolts as they are very tight and have threadlock. Braided hoses can’t be clamped no, so plug it with something clean to minimise fluid loss. Be prepared to break the brake pipes if the unions are seized when undoing them. Worth changing the short solid pipes on the calipers anyway if they’re old. Also worth spotting the brake pipe bracket if not already done, so that future work on the hub can be done without bleeding the brakes. |

Cheers RA.
Any idea what size bi-hex socket is needed? The brake pipes got replaced a good few years ago with new copper ones(automec) Also worth spotting the brake pipe bracket ? Spotting? Now is the hunt for calipers. Quite a price range on the likes of Ebay (LR Trade parts, Transglobal trading, Ribble valley 4x4 etc.) 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Sorry that should have said slotting - making the hole into a slot so that the pipe can be removed without breaking into the hydraulics.
I think it’s 13mm for the caliper bolts from memory but definitely check before buying anything as my memory is awful! Paddocks and other places sell proper AP-branded calipers for not too much money. Personally I would avoid the cheaper unbranded aftermarket ones. |

I think he meant slotting. So can slide out the brake pipe without undoing the pipe, and have to bleed again. But I could be wrong. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

In the same position John. New calipers on the way, not with SS pistons unfortunately. Justification is impossible at that price when you are a student

My 1988 is 1/2". I tried on the puma, but 1/2" is a tight fit. Unsure if because they are a bit rusty, or if they changed to 13mm which is slightly larger than 1/2". The pistons are unserviceable, but maybe the calipers are still ok. remove the pistons and check the bore.. if all good, a new set of stainless pistons on your refurbished calipers will be a good and cheaper option. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Ok, the best deal I have found is from JGS4x4 Front 110 - https://www.jgs4x4.co.uk/defender-front-br...ted-discs/ Rear 110 - https://www.jgs4x4.co.uk/defender-110-130-...iper-pair/ I am afraid they will not be as long lasting as the equivalent with SS pistons, however at around £215 for all four calipers it gets my student wallets' mark of approval. I do plan to give the new calipers a lick of paint to prolong the exterior condition though. At least even if they do not work very well in 5 years they may still look good It is also worth replacing the bolts as well - https://www.jgs4x4.co.uk/defender-discover...r-bolt-x5/ Obviously if your discs and pads need replacing then this is the time Wonder if JGS4x4 would do a forum discount?! Bala that is pretty much the next village over from me It is going to be busy tomorrow I suspect, the tourist season has really kicked off. |

Cheers. The fronts look to be stamped AP ?
I have just ordered a set of bolts so I can make sure I have the right size socket.. I was in the middle of doing pads which is why I am in the muddle I am in now Discs will need doing in the near future. JGS4x4 forum discount.... mmmm would be handy I have used them a few times. I suspect it will be busy at the railway. Hopefully we can get done what need to do sharpish. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |
