V8 conversion
Hello
I am still looking for a puma 90 , as the waiting continues I am considering a V8 conversion.

I have been looking on eBay at rover v8s and some bmw m3 v8s. I am not going for speed , something that sounds nice and offers more power then lane the standard 2.2 to make it more drivable.

I was wondering what peoples thoughts are on these ? Is it a complete money pit ? You can pick up used engines for fairly reasonable money , I was wondering if the Labour is intense

Used m3 v8’s cheep? If you are on about the s62 or the s65 never seen a cheep one that did not have a large issue. The s65’s do like to have rod bearings replaced every 100k miles, or sooner.

The s62 is simper on the electronics dept. think the issue with s65 is it has a dct gearbox not many manual ones around. Also the cas electronics on the e90+ cars are a pain to swap to another car, not saying it can not be done but most go standalone management which is ££££

Lots of the s62 are now getting premium prices and the s65 engined cars are cheep that people that cannnot afford to run them get there hands on them and don’t keep them maintained.

Also from memory they are quite wide in comparison to the ls motors that lots swap in Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Sorry I jumped the gun
It was an s65 engine with 24k on the clock including transmission

I thought it was £1500 but that was just the last bid on eBay

I have seen some of the bmw 3.0 Diesel engine swaps. How much are these costing ?

The Rover unit is fine, but don’t expect it to feel modern. My chums 110 has a V8, it’s a factory 3.5 and it’s slow, it sounds great but does about 15mpg.

The m3 v8 is the last thing I’d ever put in a Defender, it’s a very high revving engine with most of the power at the top end, it’s not even that fast in an M3 let alone a Defender.

I had an 4.4 BMW V8 in my 2003 Range Rover, it was ok. Compared to my chums X5 of the same era the m57 six in the x5 was far nicer to drive.

the better engine I think is the s54, inline 6 M-power engine from the e46 M3's

Basically same size as the M57's. uses a std gearbox.

Think there is a rally car with this setup maybe in a defender or a discovery. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.
