I guess you are talking about the LT77, being a 1989 90.
You should feel more resistance as you push the stick to the left to get it aligned with reverse. To my knowledge there is a spring loaded plunger to give that extra resistance. LT77 should be filled with ATF. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Yeah LT77, just changed oil last week with ATF. Can you install new spring loaded plunger? Thanks

I do not know if it comes as a complete assembly, but you can check on LR Workshop:
https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-r...r_53520#13 I would check the parts, It could be just a broken spring, or stuck plunger. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Just out of interest, what do you understand the term "close ratio box" to mean? |

As my gear-change assembly is still off the 90, I snapped a few pictures for you. I think you can access it from above without removing the gearbox tunnel. Mind there is a shim.
The plunger is very difficult to press by hand. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

it sounds like the plunger on yours has jammed in,
strip, clean, oil and reassemble and pinch in and out in a vice a few times to test, Dave |

Hey all, still never got round to getting this fixed. To be honest just recently realized my 300tdi has a td5 gear box. Any ideas about plunger location etc

Tdi300 and Td5 have the same R380 gearbox. But that would be strange, as in 1st post you mentioned that you select reverse instead of 1st.
On lt77, reverse is next to 1st. On R380, reverse is next to 4th, below 5th. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Check the Ashcroft site: https://ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/produ...gearboxes/
It explains how to determine which gearbox you have. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Quick search with HRC1820 I get Discovery LT77 bellhousing.
So maybe you have a Discovery gearbox. You should be able to see the serial number stamped on the right side of the box, you can see it if you crawl underneath, there is a protrusion in the casting to create a flat surface for the factory to stamp the serial. Normally with a discovery gearbox, the gearstick is a bit more aft compared to a Defender, unless the engine/gearbox have been shifted forwards which complicates things. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
