EDIT: sod's law. As soon as I posted the query above, it dawned on me to look for a set of fitting instructions for a NAS rear step and, sure enough the crush tubes are there and it shows the orientation:

EDIT #2: I've found the current part number for the brackets: KVX000020. So I can find it on LRWorkshop now and it definitely should have been there from the factory on my CSW, so has been lost when galvanising. Really good spot by the inspecting mechanic. Damn - now there's three different part numbers in play: alr3226 which was superseded by KVX000020 and anr3821. |

I have replaced those on a Td5 (just fabricated new stainless ones) and took the ones off my Puma for hot dip galvanizing. They looked identical between Td5 and Puma.
They go in through the ends of the crossmember, kind of a rotation motion. And yes, the tab to hold it from then will be towards the top of the crossmember. Very clever mud trap design But without them you do not have much of seatbelt bracing. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

This is how I got it out/in. Rotate it 180° once inside the crossmember.
