Hi folk
After completing all my oil /filter changes I took the beast for a drive and came back with a radiator leak Today I removed the radiator for inspection as I could not locate the leak ...and then spent a few hours cleaning the front of the engine etc ... While cleaning I noticed a damp oily corner on the Intercooler (see picture below). Now as I know nothing about the intercooler system can someone advise me if what I'm seeing is OK or is this another failing part ?£££££ Click image to enlarge Many thanks John 2010 Defender 90 300Tdi CW (White/1994) 2021 Defender 90 300Tdi SW (Blue/1994) |

Almost certainly 100% normal. The turbo air pipework on a 300Tdi will 'almost certainly' have a lot of oil in it.
Over time some of this will work its way beyond the pipes and clips and run down the front of the intercooler (and many other places!) That's not to mention all the other little drips that get blown about in there. If you were concerned, and if the rad is out anyway, you might want to take it to your local machine shop and get it pressure tested (or DIY if you have the kit?) But unless you think you have a loss of turbo boost, then nothing to worry about. Hi Donald
Thanks very much for a positive reply, a great sigh of relief So with that said, I'm changing the cooling hoses: ... is it worth changing the intercooler hoses? and if I take them off ... am I going to find lots of oil in there? Thanks John 2010 Defender 90 300Tdi CW (White/1994) 2021 Defender 90 300Tdi SW (Blue/1994) |

"Almost certainly"!
Mine were swapped for silicone many, many years ago, but if yours are in good nick there's no real need. If you take them off, just pay attention to where the oil is. Both intercooler hoses will have, say, a teaspoon or so in them I'd expect, depending on the condition of the rest of the engine and pipework If you take off the air intake pipe (a bit more involved - round the back, between the air filter canister and the turbo) , you'll probably find oil in the last part of that. This is where oily air from the crankcase is recycled back into the engine intake. Not a great idea, but these engines do seem to go for 100s of thousands of miles like this. Just change engine oil and filters regularly and your engine will thank you.
