Blown turbo replacement
Hi All
I’ve got a blown turbo on my 2.4 Defender.
Will this just need a new turbo or will the engine need a rebuild.
I’ve been advised that some metal particles from the turbo could be floating in the engine oil and a new engine would be the best solution.
Many Thanks
Steve

Do you have big chunks of the compressor blades that are missing? Most likely they get stuck in the intercooler.
Worse case is that they get stuck on the valve seats and prevent the valves from seating properly. That would lead to low compression in the affected cylinders.
But they would not reach the oil. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks for the advise
I’m not sure on how much damage to the turbo there is but
I’m told that I can have an engine flush and a new turbo, but the best solution would be
a complete engine and clutch assembly.

Take the inlet hose off the turbo and inspect the compressor wheel for damage > 110 XS Double Cab

....and a new clutch assembly

someone taking you for a ride?

I'd get a second opinion.
then go with the turbo only - wait and see if the engine is ok or not.

what they said, you need to see the turbo check how much metal has passed into and beyond the intercooler DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy
