Good question. I have been playing around with this very thing myself. Those smaller diameter bars are not flat and I have been told that fitting a tent to them is not the best solution as the tent can slip from side to side.
I was advised to get the SD roof tent brackets, but at £30 per bracket (HOW...?!) I resigned myself to making them myself. Ultimately if you want it quick the SD brackets are your only solution and yes four of them. The tabs on the roll cage are meant for side mounted flood lights. I guess it is all relative, since the only other alternative is to buy a roof rack to mount the tent on instead @ >£1000 |

Just to expand on the DIY aspect I had planned on getting two of these
https://www.britishpipeclamps.co.uk/produc...ing-pb383/ 50cm of 5mm flat bar, threaded bar, 8x threaded spacers and some nuts. Measure, chop, weld, paint and fit. When all done it will cost less than half the cost of the SD brackets. If you can do the measuring and cutting and do not have a welder then it shouldn't be hard to get someone to quickly weld the threaded bar to the flat bar. |

Just fitted a tent to my cage and used the SD brackets...Expensive yes, but do the job simply.
One thing is if you put the bolts on the inside edge of the cage, there is very little space to get your hand in to tighten the nuts....but that also makes it harder for someone to try to steal! Can take pics if needed Cheers Al |

I know they're relatively expensive but you've got a £2k+ cage, and a £1k+ tent so £120 on brackets to mate the 2 properly isn't too bad in the scheme of things. Better than the whole lot coming loose at 70mph on the motorway.

HI,
Just seen this thread, and I am doing the same as well. Maybe too late but I ordered my SD clamps though the SD shop on Ebay as they were cheaper? Got even better when they said they were out of stock of the loose bolt type and upgraded me to the fixed stud type for free. I bought six as I have a Tentbox classic, so am running three aluminium box section bars across, will bolt these to the tentbox, then drop the whole thing on the roof. I have put my SD fixings inboard, and will hopefully be able to get my fingers under the SD cage to get the inboard nuts on. Will post a pictures when finished, as not sure my description is very clear!. Cheers Alastair |

I’m currently discussing fitting a RTT to my Defender…..and I need the the dimension of the parallel tubes as shown in Skeggy’s photo. I’d measure it myself but I’m in the Middle East and the vehicle is in the UK… Any idea of the out to out dimension the tubes running front to back ? Thanks
