V8 Soft top and fumes
Test drove a 1984 90 V8 pick up with a soft top conversion today.

It had only run for a few minutes before the test drive but there was quite a build up of fumes inside whilst driving round a few back roads.
That 90 wasn't the one for me but if I converted a V8 to a soft top are the fumes going to be a standard thing or did that engine need a bit of fettling? No leaks from exhaust, pipe exited on n/s corner.

I run with the rear AND SIDES rolled up ALL of the time, it stops fumes that you get with the rear only rolled up and bizarrely the heaters are more effective as the airflow seems to draw the heat in. We once drove to Ginjez’s breakfast meet in Yorkshire (from Staffs) in winter with the hood fully closed and it was freezing, we had to stop to get a blanket at the services Laughing

Thanks both, good info to a relative newbie.

Greeni's option still encourages me to do a soft top conversion. I think on the test drive the rear was also down so I was surprised by the amount of fumes.

Only downside is the hood moves around at speed and flaps against the cage, so it’s a bit noisy.
But in ‘summer mode’ it’s quiet enough that the missus actually can fall asleep.. (though she admits the v8 burble is soothing and that’s why she falls asleep).

I know mine is diesel and doesn't seem to suffer from fumes being pulled into the cab but with hood totally off it was very draughty around neck and shoulders. I went some way to sorting this by having a mesh curtain made which attaches behind the seats similar to what you get with an slk. It certainly improves things considerably

The fact that driving with the rear curtain rolled up inevitably causes exhaust fumes to be drawn into the vehicle is usually stated as the reason for the introduction of the dash vents in 1954.

At the time the dash vents were deleted in 2007 I don't think that there were any models available from the factory with full-length tilts, and that, together with the new dash trim and instrument pack introduced with the TDCi models, is undoubtedly the reason why the vents were deleted.

Exmoor Trim used to make a fume guard that attached behind the front seats like a load guard.

A friend of mine used his in his 90 HT in the winter as it would also warm the cab up quicker.

Worth a look to see if they still make it

I have a 1985 V8 Ninety and don’t seem to have problems with fumes with just the back rolled up. You can get a fume curtain from the likes of Undercover Covers but that might defeat the object of having the back rolled up.

When I had my S/S exhaust fitted they suggested a side exit was better for less fumes. I've run about with just back up and back and sides rolled up and no issues with fumes. This weekend was great fun but whilst beautifully sunny was not warm! Rolling with laughter Lovely and warm in the front!! Laughing

The Td5 soft top I built a few years back never suffered from any fumes in the cab, not that I recall anyway. Had a standard Td5 tail pipe angled slightly as they are.

Thanks everyone. Glad I posted now and didn't expect to get so many replies.
Definitely given me some ideas to look into. Just feel the 90 truck cab is a bit too enclosed and love to hear that V8 note but without the fumes, they were quite over powering for a short journey.

It’s something I noticed a lot when I converted to soft top,
Rolling just the back up is a no no
The back & sides is bearable, cracking the vents open does help
But I find rolling the rear quarter lights up with the sides & rear has the best result & a lot less flapping!

Interesting debate… no fumes at all in my v8 soft top with just the back and or sides up or down. Weird. I’m running cats.
