Chopping hole in log cabin

Hi,

I’m about to ‘knock through’ from one room to another, ie cut through the 44mm thick timber and want it to be straight and square ready to fit a doorway and door, with as little mess as poss.

What would you use and how would you go about it? I have a choice of chainsaw, circular saw, carpentry-type handsaw. I think it’s too thick for my jigsaw and that’d probably be a bit wobbly anyway.

Circular saw with a guide plank or track saw finish with handsaw then line it out

I agree with ibexman, just make sure it has a nice sharp blade and a good straight edge as a guide and have a good sharp handsaw for the bottoms and corners. I think screwfix have Irwin handsaws for about £6 at present if you want a new sharp one.

Tracksaw. I’ve got a Festool TS55 that would do it if you want to borrow it. I’m in easingwold. I imagine you would use a blade doing a door way but it will be straight as a die. I’m away for the next week though so no good if your in a rush.

Co1 that’s very kind of you. I’ve not used one before and wouldn’t want to do my test run using your kit. If you’re likely to be heading Dunnington way I’d happily sort you some beer tokens if you have the time for a bit of supervision / assistance, understand if you’re flat out though. Not in a desperate rush, feel free to drop me a PM otherwise I’ll crack on with the guide plank, circ saw and hand saw.

No worries Matt, but I’m tied up for the next few weekends with no plans to be over your way. Have a look on line, it’s not hard to use and there isn’t much you could do to damage it!! Failing that, the circular saw against a straight edge is a reasonable second choice and will do a decent enough job.

Well if you'd asked my stepfather how to insert a doorway in to a log cabin he'd have reached for his chainsaw. He was a Canadian lumberjack for way too many years. It is incredible what he can do with a chainsaw.

Love a log cabin. Built a small one room Air BnB one a few years ago. Super cosy.
