United Kingdom 1993 Defender 90 Other HT Caledonian Blue
Newbie with clutch issues
Hi to all

Im new to forum and to start off I have a question that I'm hoping someone can help with. I have a 1993/l Defender 90 Hardtop and I've owned for the last 8yrs and covered 70k miles. My biggest issue is that in the last 5 years I've had 4 clutches and need another again Big Cry I've had 2 clutches fitted by a garage, 1 by a landrover specialist and 1 by my brother (a mechanic). I never ride the clutch but do use the Landy for towing a horsebox and 2x 14hh horses. I'm no mechanic but 5 clutches in 5 years seems excessive and there must be another issue causing the clutch to wear

Please help!!!!!!!

Apart from a stainless sump guard, the Landy is completely standard. Been driving for 17 years and with work I drive 40k miles a year. Never had a clutch changed in any cars except for one evry year in the Landy Crying or Very sad

What exactly has been the fault with all these clutches - are you saying the plates are wearing out or is it some other failure? Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

[Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc]

Is it a Td5 engine? Have you used OE or genuine spare parts?
I assume you changed the pressure plate at some point.
Perhaps the double mass flywheel is not good anymore (internal spings), twisted.
Out of tolerance crankshaft rear flange?
Condition of both (engine and gearbox) input shaft bearings.
Std engine and no remap/chip on?
Check both propshafts are tuning with no issues and you can truly unlock the central diff (beyond the warning light switches off on the intrument panel).
You start to move in 1st and not 2nd gear? Puma 110" SW

It's being predoninantly by the wife at the moment and the symptoms she's describing is high biting point on the pedal and slipping clutch when towing. Not sure on the engine and all I can say is that it's a 1993/l with a 2.5tdi engine (no chip). Clutch only fitted in January (found reciept) and was a genuine Landrover part from Rimmer Brothers. Was done as a kit, so yes the pressure plate was done too. The only thing I can think of is that the 2nd gearbox doesn't work properly and will only engage in high range/no diff lock. I thought this fault might be causing the clutch to go? As for the other issues, I can't say but I'll ask my garage to look into them

Many thanks for the reply

Clutches just seem to be wearing very, very quickly. I'm ok with basic engine work and I've checked the master & slave cylinder and both look to be ok.

Could it be a problem with the flywheel? John

1993, so is that 300 Tdi?

Could the wrong push rod be fitted?

Why is the clutch always biting so high?

Pedal not set correct?

Andy
