Defender Puma High Level Brake Light Not Working.

Just had the Puma in for an MOT. Lots of work down to sort the advisories from last years.
It was picked up for brake lights and high level light not working (I did check them the day before). They fitted new brake light bulbs but could get the high level light working. But at least it passed the MOT.
So a bit of work today. Rear door card off. Checked and found 12v at the screen connector. 12v at the brake light and back down to the earth point. Took the bulb holder out, bridged across 12v and it worked. Lots of swearing and head scratching.
I resoldered all of the windscreen connector points and retested power. Had 12v until just short of the High Level Brake Light Screen Connector. Tested, cleaned still no good.
So I soldered a short wire link from the screen power track to the solder connector retested and high level brake light now working.
I can only assume that there is a break in the track and although it registered as 12v there wasn’t enough current to power the bulb. Cleaned up, put back together all now working a great.
Hopefully a few pictures attached. 2009 Defender 90 CSW 2.4 TDCI.

That’s a good result Thumbs Up

Glad you found the break - must have been a hairline fracture. I’m sure your post will be helpful to others Thumbs Up

It’s great when you can repair things yourself.

Thanks Scribble. Frustrating it went wrong during the MOT but at least it was the only thing! 2009 Defender 90 CSW 2.4 TDCI.

This is a common occurance. I simply ran two wires inside the rubber window seal from the bottom connections to the top connections. The rubber can be just prised aside as you push in the wire (one each side). 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I had the same trouble on my Td5, I did as Spudfan did and ran a cable up the inside of the window rubber. It all tested up fine, 12 v being delivered to the bulb holder but as soon as any load was applied the volts dropped to zero. I put i down to the metallic strip bonded to the window and due to an impending MOT I did the cable fix.

This was done as a "temporary fix" about six or seven years ago and it is still in place! Before that I noticed it was not working when we were out somewhere and I used silver foil from a chocolate bar to get continuity in the element at the top! That lasted until I got around to doing the wire fix!!! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Spudfan and Penfold. Feeding in a wire was an option but I was keen to keep it almost original 😊👍 2009 Defender 90 CSW 2.4 TDCI.
