GM L83 vs L86
Just wondering why the former isn't more frequently used as a conversion engine, given the likely improved fuel efficiency, and less need for drivetrain hardening.

Any views from anyone who's considered this appreciated

Good question, the L83 is still right on the limit of the LR drivetrain, perhaps even past it without some serious upgrades. I suspect at that point the L86 is more appealing if you're already having to go down the route of swapping the gearbox etc. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Can't see the point in going L83 if one is going to go to all the trouble & expense with respect to a conversion via the GM V8 route.
L86 gives greater capacity, much more powere etc, and indeed there are probably other engines of similar capacity in the GM stable that are even better.
IMHO the 6.2L LS3 is the ideal engine if you're going to be naturally aspirated, and if you're considering supercharging, well there's a range of GM engines to choose from.
There are so many engines to choose from, I can't remember them all, but a google search of say "GM Crate engines" would be a start.
As we used to say, "There's no substitute for cubic inches", the later words being "There's no replacement for displacement"!
Of course these are just my thoughts, because at the end of the day, it's absolutely your dollars & your choice.
