Cut out after pulling off motorway…
Strange issue which hopefully you can help shed some light upon

Pulling off motorway after 1.5hrs at 70mph coming down slip road to roundabout truck decided to lose power. Managed to crawl around roundabout, little trottle response managed to make it safely to pull over. No engine management light, not overheating,

Turned everything off - waited a minute - turn back on and all good like nothing had happened.

Never had anything like this previously on ‘07 2.4 puma

It had a new VCV/SCV a year ago…. Could it be that again?

Thanks in advance

this is exactly what mine has been doing, when I let off accelerator from being with steady speed, it looses power, I tried a few things, fuel filter, cleaning maf/map, latest is the VCV which I changes the other week, but not been able to test it yet. Deliberately being doing one change at a time and testing it. It would of been tested this weekend just gone, but I got a lift, so did not get a chance to test it.

Where did you get the VCV from? as some do say they can go bad if they get water in them etc, so maybe water in fuel can cause it to fail. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Mine did this but did come up with a fault light and code which indicated a MAF problem. Cleaned it as it was only 2y old and all has been fine since… 2.4TDCI 90 - everyday brilliance

Thank you for the help and replies

The vCV fitted a year ago was from PF Jones - it was their brand not a full DENSO

Will start by cleaning the MAF as suggested above and see if that helps.

Annoyingly (or not) running just fine today….

Possibly turbo vanes sticking, next time it happens, don't switch off - open the bonnet and get someone to rev it and watch the linkage to see if it moves, if not switch off and try it again and it should move when revved.

If it is above, new turbo depending on mileage or a can of aerosol sprayed up into the turbo.

I had this and it was the MAF, took ages to track it down. I found out later that you can unplug the MAF and drive it about and see if the problem stops. My understanding is that with the MAF unplugged it just uses a default map.

After replacement and an injector learn its been 100% for the last 5 years. By the way we tried injector learns before the replacement and that had not fixed it.

If it does it on and off...

Sometimes once in a trip then nothing for weeks then 3 times in one trip...

Mine was a faulty ignition barrel. It wasn't logging any codes.

Easy fix but a nightmare when it cut out on the motorway... it would restart a split second later

My 2.4 has done something similar a couple of times after long journeys at motorway speeds. Turns on the engine management light but doesn't affect performance (other than me backing off a bit). Pull off the motorway, switch off and restart and everything seems fine.

Got home and cleaned the MAF and problem solved. Air intake very crudded up though so cleaned out. Everything fine for months until the next motorway journey and the same solution.

Is it maybe linked to EGR position for a DPF regen? Air intake and MAF is pretty clean normally. I always carry a can of MAF cleaner on long journeys now.

No DPF on a 2.4.

Is there some other cycle that's triggered by a long journey that might cause these similar symptoms. Maybe the continuously open throttle or the turbo operating for extended periods? It's funny how it seems to only happen on long journeys with constant revs (70-80 in 6th for 45 mins)

Can't explain why but my 2010 usw did exactly the same a couple of years ago. The fault code said boost overpressure. It restarted every time but made for nervous driving! 2010 XS USW

Mine does this.

So far I am checking/changing parts one by one then waiting till I go on a long drive 1 hour ish down the motorway. Normally does not occur on the way there but on way back. Happens if I let off the throttle and back on, if I do that again sometimes it comes back other times it takes longer. Normally switch off and restart all is fine.

So far changed

Air filter (extra change not in the schedule)
Fuel filter
Cleaned maf/map
Changed vcv (not tested yet)

In the error codes I have sometimes under boost other times, over boost. But have also had it happen with no error codes.

My egr does the chugga chugga, and the turbo actuator looks to move freely. Have thought about mounting a camera close to the turbo to see if it’s the actuator playing up.

Never had the engine light on though yet.

I know it can occur so at present I expect it to happen and no longer surprise me.

My coolant level is rock steady and not needed any adding over the time I have had the car.

So for me still investigating and testing. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

I'd suggest a problem with the turbo actuator, probably heat related. Even if the linkage moves freely, they can develop other faults that mean they don't work as intended. Darren

Thanks LRA that’s why I now have an old go pro that I am rigging to be able to turn on with a camera. As think the actuator is $$$ and want to see it failing, that’s if the vcv is not the contributing factor Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.
