Cheapskate alternative for rear door gas strut.
I've been scratching my head for some time about the alternatives to the expensive gas struts that are available for defender rear doors. I've read reports on this forum that one make will distort and push out the door card whilst the other may stress the rear door itself. The only alternative to the gas strut seems to be a broom handle........until now.
I experimented with wooden wedges and plastic wedges but they all fell out at the most inconvenient time.
I decided to try an air bag wedge and it works - shove it in the gap between the door and the body
and give the bulb a few pumps - solid as a rock. Cost about six quid. Also ideal as an aid for opening a locked car door.
