When will LR charge for software updates?
According to news reports chip designers and car makers are up to demand for software updates on a monthly base.

Owners are just being herded into a large pen at the moment...

Interesting to see where Ford is going with SOTA and connectivity in general:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ford-mo...SKBN25Z2JH

"betting Ford can transform its commercial vehicle business to generate recurring revenue through sales of services that take advantage of the software, data and connectivity in its F-Series pickup truck and Transit vans."

"Think of the data being more powerful than the fuel economy of the vehicle," he added."

" Purdy and other Ford officials want Ford's commercial customers to regularly pay for services, creating a revenue stream that flows throughout the vehicle's life, beyond a one-time transaction every few years."

"to help build a "sticky" relationship with customers."

" Hans Schep, head of Ford's European commercial vehicle business, said the shift in focus is playing out in meetings on quality. Five years ago, those meetings were about how to reduce Ford's warranty costs, he said. Now, the discussions are about how to keep its customers' vehicles on the road."

It will be worse once all you can buy are BEV’s as there is very little to be done on a routine service - top up / change hydraulic fluids, check the brakes, top up the washer fluid and sort out any warranty items until that runs out……….. charge a fortune! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Until you realise that they have looked at the servicing revenue available from BEV`s and then decided that the battery coolant used needs to be changed more often than a toddlers nappy and is more expensive than 10 year old malt.
In my case, every 40k or 4 years and around £400!!!!!!
There goes a large part of the savings in running costs. Don`t drive faster than your angel can fly!

Map monthly software updates are already chargeable by JRL once the licence has run out at three years.

one year is £89

Three years is £129

And in typical JLR style they then add the VAT at point of sale.......

If you use Apple or Android connectivity and not use the JLR system then you don't need to bother with the updates.

So going back to the original post, its only one step away and as i am guessing the manufacturers would use this against the owner in the event of a warrantee claim they could have you by the short and curlies....
