Normally just a big rag around my wrist to slow the flow to my forearm and jumper.
Zip locks bags when removing the old warm oil filter can help. |

Thank you Marks. To be honest, I tried to prefill, but I think most oil came out by the time I managed to get the threads connected and spun in.
i had this idea cross my mind after posting... since I have not installed the oil cooler, I could try to prime through one of the oil cooler connections. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

I half fill it, that way it doesn’t leak out when you tip it to line it up with the threads.

Ok Retroanaconda. I was hoping I could get it a bit less empty. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Half fill it, any more just runs down your arm. 👍

Try lieing the vehicle on its side as you fit the prefilled filter

It doesn’t do any harm to the engine for it to run at idle for a few seconds while the oil pressure builds up, there is very little load on it in that situation. If you’re really worried you could pull the stop solenoid wire off, crank the engine until the light goes out, and then reconnect it to start. I’m not sure it is worth the bother though.

Like that idea Old Skool. Did not cross my mind. Although the way the filter mounts, need to lift the front end by quite a bit
Retroanaconda.. I never used to worry between oil changes. But since this is a full rebuild, I may be over cautious. I installed new main bearing / connecting rod big end bearings with assembly lube, and that is quite gooey stuff. Same for the camshaft, although that retained the original bearings. I will crank it a bit before enabling the fuel. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

This is what we do with TD5 before starting after refilling with oil. |

Assembly lube will be more than enough to keep it safe until the oil pressure builds up.

plan to crank without heater plugs, and fuel off to prevent diesel washing off the oil in the bores until oil pressure builds up, and the squirters do their job (sounds dirty) 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
