Oil cooler pipe? Different types?
Oil cooler pipes 300tdi 90 1997

I am replacing my lower oil cooler pipe because whilst replacing the radiator the connection was not seized and was bending the pipe. I had no option but to cut the pipe and order a new pipe which I thought would be an easy job!.....But the new part I've ordered (PBP500200) is too long at the oil pump end. I haven't got enough room to bend it like the existing original pipe. I'm told there is only 1 part number for this so why is my original one shorter? I can't get it to fit as I need the rubber part of the pipe to bend sooner and I cannot find any other types with a short end like mine which I'm really surprised by!

Anyone got any ideas? I'm out of ideas and it's off the road obviously at the moment. I had thoughts of going to pirtek and seeing if they could join the old pipe I cut but not sure if they can do that.

Thanks in advance!

I had exactly this issue, though it’s quite some while ago now.

I am speculating a bit, but I reckon there might once have been two layouts for the pipe - one for the Defender 300s one for the Discovery. Over time, for whatever reason, the Disco one has become the only one available.

I know I asked the question on here, and posted some pics. It might be somewhere in my rebuild thread, or I might have posted a separate question. I’ll see if I can find it after I post this. I think my issue was that the pipe fitted the cooler OK, but the space between the inner wing and the oil filter housing was too narrow, and there wasn’t enough bend in the pipe. If I’d cut a slot in the inner wing I think it would have worked, but I wasn’t going to do that.

In the end I went down to my local Indy garage. He was familiar with the problem and ordered up 2 or 3 more pipes - one fitted. My plan B was like yours - take the old pipe down to pirtek or the like, and see if they could remake it. Edit - sorry, just twigged that you had to cut the old pipe…

Edit 2 - here’s the thread, and a part number suggestion: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59970.html Donald

Many thanks for your replies!

@Donmacn

Yes thanks for that info. After I made this post I found your old thread and was relieved it wasn't just me having this issue as I was starting to doubt myself! Yes my new pipe is hitting the wheel arch liner too and I'm in a right pickle as I sacrificed it by cutting it thinking it was going to be easy getting a replacement!

All I can think of is that mine is a late 300 TDI 1997 and they must have changed the pipe for some reason but only for a few months on the production line? And then once the aftermarket pipes were made by bearmach/britpart and such they followed this now common pipe size which is longer.

I see in your thread you got a britpart hose (pbp500200g). I think the g stands for genuine but some of the britpart hoses of that part number I've seen on eBay are of the longer length :/

I scoured eBay and there was only 1 pipe which was the exact same as mine and it's a 2nd hand one so I bought that for £30!!!!! As I have no other option. Once I get it fitted and the landy is back running I will visit multiple LR wholesalers and try and find a new version of it and let everyone know where it can be obtained from/correct part number.

Thanks again!! 😊

No probs - I know that feeling of wondering "is it just me??!" and thinking you're trying to do such a straightforward task, but it's not happening.

Your post has reminded me that I specifically kept my old pipe with a view to having it refurbed. It's nowhere near a priority now (and might never be needed) but if I come across it I might take it down to pirtek and see what they make of it.

If you do find a better or more appropriate part number please do post back. Donald

Had this exact same issue a couple of years ago when re-chassising my 300tdi 110. I already knew the pipe was fragile due to corrosion and some twisting of the metal portion during an earlier radiator replacement so thought the rebuild was the perfect time to replace it. Had the same issue with the replacement and final solution was to get the local hydraulic hose place to make a hybrid pipe up using the old and new pipes.

I've got a genuine PBP500200 (2005 onwards) and it's about 60cm long. Full photos are here: https://www.lrworkshop.com/parts/PBP500200, although I couldn't tell you what the differences to earlier parts are.

There are 4 part numbers for the pipe: https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-r...es_52992#2

and through the chain of supersedures you would expect there to be only one part number to choose from. The part number changed during the TA chassis numbers around number 975k, which is early 1996 MY vehicles registered in the UK around October 1995. LR Workshop

And the next draft question the lower oil cooling pipe tdi 200 and 300 laves engine filter and oil thermostat housing side ways but needs to go to front offside so why is not 90 bend in the short metal tub that level side engine filter and oil thermostat housing Question

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Yes I have used your great website Will and it was very helpful regarding part numbers and I always head there first to find a part number!

Looks like there are 2 possible old part numbers that were used 1996 onwards based on the VINs but both are now superseded.

I'm ringing round a few land rover specialists in Norfolk to see if anyone has any old new stock! Once I get to the bottom of this I will report back!
