Measuring front wiper sweep
From another post my drivers side wiper sweep goes too far and wiper the windscreen rubber.
A video link was posted to Britannia Restorations that showed you can alter the angle of sweep by altering/changing the wiper cog.

Whats the best way to measure the current angle of sweep?
Protractor lined up with the wiper arm ?
Protractor lined up with the spindle for the wiper ?
and measure to the max sweep position? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I would use a bit of trigonometry if i was you.

Get a chalk marker, put a dot at the end of the blade in the park position. Move the wiper to the extents of its sweep and put another dot. Now you can use a tape measure to measure the distance from the centre of the spindle to either dot, and the distance between the dots. You know have an isosceles triangle with all three side lengths known.

You can then either divide that triangle into two right angled triangles and use pythagorus' theorem or just use the sin/cosine rule to work the angle out.

Yup I would say the easiest way is by protractor or OS orienteering compass. Make sure there is no slop in the system before doing the test by lifting the wiper arm and twisting it. If it is loose it might need a little tightening first.

Maybe you can measure the chord length at the top of the wipe... you know the distance from the wiper spindle to the tip of the wiper.. and do some math... in the age of the lazy, you can use one of the online calculators such as this:
(only need to measure two dimensions, keep the rest blank)

Sounds like you have the wrong wiper motor drive gear if its travelling too far, the pre 2002 models use a different ratio drive to wheel box then the post 2002 models

If the circlip falls off the crank on the motor spindle, the bush falls out and centrifugal force effectively increases the sweep of the spindle and the travel of the rack and hence increases the angle of the wiper sweep, rubber hits screen surround etc....

The easiest way to measure it with a protractor would be to extend the lines made by the extremities of the sweep and measure the angle between them. Perhaps use a rule and a non permanent marker to draw the lines on the glass.

I followed the DSC-Off method and got a measure of 115 degree's or there abouts. There was some play in the grub screw that holds the splined adapter on, so tightened this up.
There is some play in the wheel box(not sure how much there should be) 1999 Defender TD5 110
