Focal es100k crossover
Need a bit of advice from those running these speakers….

I’ve just installed and am not totally amazed by them, however I’ll be installing an amp soon which I hope will make the difference.

I left the tweeter on 0db to start with. Sounds fine to me although others say too bright or tinny. Either way I get how I can dial back the tweeter.

Now the other switch on the crossover is HPF or full. This I believe is for the woofer…. If you can call a 10cm cone that! Am I correct in saying this limits the signal to 100hz?

If so, seeing as I have a sub, should I put this HPF on?

And if so, should my sub be set to about 120hz for a little overlap?

Thoughts appreciated

It's a good job you don't live in Afghanistan - they just banned the playing of music in cars - unbelievable but unfortunately true.

Well, if I lived in Afghanistan I wouldn’t have this “first world” crossover dilemma would I? You don’t see them worrying about this Censored ….. Anyhow, off to fly my kite.

The frequency response for the es100k is 140hz.
I don't know what frequency the high pass filter cuts off at, but seeing as it is on a crossover that was custom designed for those speakers, then it's a safe bet it's correct for the set up and you can switch it on.

Regarding the subwoofer, I'd be setting the low pass filter to 150 / 160hz, and adjust it from there. Probably not less than 140hz as a minimum, to match the lower end of the es100k's
If your sub has a subsonic filter (high pass) the ideal setting for that will depend on the speaker and amplifier.

Would be interested to hear which amp you go for and opinion of the result.
I still haven't amped my 130K's, due to doing mostly short runs that flatten the battery even without an amp!

I’ve already got the amp. A JL Audio JD400/4. Going to amp the es100k and the focal PC165 in the rear.

I’m busy till early/mid Jan but will be fully on it then.

I too am interested to see what an amp does to the speakers. Both sets claim to run 60w RMS and the amp can deliver 75w/channel RMS so should be a good match. Stock stereos deliver 20-25w RMS so are very underpowered. I’ve never amped anything but a sub before.

To be honest I'm only hoping to notice a difference. I can’t see how I’ll be blown away. If anyone is looking for bang for buck in sound improvement, a decent sub is 80-90% there even with stock speakers and head unit. It’s that warm bass only a large speaker can handle.

And thanks for your sub lpf suggestion. I’ve got it at about 150hz I think. Seems to be there or there about. Not going to faff too much until I get the other amp set up as it’ll all be reset up again then.
