Anti Roll Bar noise
Bit of an odd one, however approx March of last year a full ARB kit was fitted to the front and rear of the 90. At the time, I noticed at standstill to probably 5mph (i.e. not really moving but moving to parallel park etc), if the steering was turned you could hear a faint buzzing/humming sound from the front. It was not there before, but clearly evident after the ARB install.

I put it down to the kit being fresh / new..... i.e. I didn't really want to look at it again. Seemed the right choice as over the summer it seemed to disappear.

However, recently I started to drive it and found I could hear the noise again under same circumstances.

It's not a deal-breaker, but curious what it could now be. I do not feel I've heard other Defenders I've driven with ARB's making that noise.

Anybody else had this?

Faint buzzing or humming noise. A bit weird for an ARB to produce that. Could it be the change in stiffness at the front end due to the ARB makes the PAS box work a little harder and it is that that is humming...?!

In which case, perhaps a PAS fluid flush might be a good place to start.

Take it back off again and do your normal drive to see if that really is the issue.

Worth also getting on your back and checking the underside in case you have collected something off the road.

Thumbs Up

Thanks both, yes agreed bit of an odd one.

Mark the noise appeared immediately upon fitting it and its first outing, underneath seems to be quite fine.

I am leaning towards perhaps something underlying was making a noise and perhaps the front ARB has amplified it, that it has now been noticed.

I checked the fluid..... perhaps quite a bit low? But equally yes unsure when it was last replaced and could be worthwhile.

Ha yes that reservoir is very low. That will make the PAS system groan a little and especially getting towards full lock.

Refil, let the engine idle to circulate then slowly go from lock to lock working the PAS system and it should expel any air in the system. This is best done on a low traction surface such as gravel or if you only have paving or tarmac or concrete to work on then place a couple of squares of ply under the front tyres.

You are basically doing a PAS fluid flush and refill Thumbs Up

Do the later Defenders not have the dipstick on the lid of the power steering reservoir ?

Thank you for the replies and guidance Smile

Would you know what fluid (assuming it is a generic fluid) it needs to be topped up with? I've no idea what's in it...

Yes there is a dipstick on the lid..... and guess which dipstick paid no attention to it (mostly because I had no way to dry it off) Laughing Whistle

Did a fluids check on the landy today and the fluid is similar colour to the photo, so suspect its probably ATF.

The LR original stuff online seems to be green, so suspect yours (or mine for that matter ) isn't that Confused
