I've never owned a vehicle with built-in sat nav so I've always used apps for the last 10+ years I've been driving.
Waze has always been pretty consistent and reliable for me. It's more of a community-based one where users can alert road users of hazards. I use that for most of my non-local drives. Waze is owned by Google and supposedly their live traffic data feed each other. I also like to use the ViaMichelin app sometimes when I fancy a route perhaps a bit more exciting or unusual, where I can use its 'Discovery' routing option. Most sat navs/apps go for the fastest or most efficient, whereas Discovery just takes you on a bit of a detour/adventure, as the name implies. However I do find the app somewhat clunky and not so UX-freindly as Waze/Apple/Google. There's an alternative option which I've rarely used or had to use, called HERE WeGo (by Nokia, weirdly enough). This allows you to download maps of entire countries so is useful when no signal is available. I know Google Maps has a similar function, although you set the area you want to download instead. 2003 90 TD5 Hardtop |

I use LRs sat nav, have done on all LRs I’ve owned. I tried Google maps once and didn’t like it as it doesn’t show on the digital dash. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze are the ‘big three’ and all free to use. They all have their pros and cons - Apple Maps has the best voice integration, Waze the best traffic alerts and Google maps has the offline maps capability and the ability to plan a multi-stop route.
I use Google maps when towing the caravan most of the time because you can pre-plan a route to be where you want to go rather than the fastest/shortest, which can be a major factor when towing. I don’t want to be going through a town centre because Waze reckons it’s 30 seconds faster than the ring road! So I use all three depending on my whim. - just ‘want to get there’ it’s Apple Maps. Worried about traffic/busy time of the day/year - Waze. Complicated route or need to be careful when towing - Google maps. Try them all and see what suits you best. "UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. "OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car. "HORSEPOWER" ----is how fast you hit the fence. "TORQUE" -----------is how far you take the fence with you. |

As a satnav app, I think TomTom Go is excellent. You have tomoau a small subscription, but it is an excellent satnav with traffic and functions even when you have no internet or phone signal. It does take up quite a lot.l of device storeage though. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

The live traffic updates on the LR Nav I’ve found to be excellent - twice now I’ve not followed advice from her in the dash on local roads (because I think I know better on local driven roads) and found she’s right, the road is closed by an RTA, turn around and retrace 6 miles to the alternative route she initially recommended…….. I find my pivipro isn't updated with road closures and even no-turn signs in some cases. I rarely use it.
Google maps is generally my preferred option, good lane guidance and generally accurate with congestion etc. But it has let me down a little bit with London Road closures/diversions, and some bus gates it doesnt know about. 90% Waze is more accurate in terms of road closures, hazards etc, but its visuals are so annoying they almost render the app unusable. Too cartoony, too many fat icons floating around getting in the way of the actual roads and junctions. Very clumsy. I do like reporting police speed traps though.. 10% |

The inbuilt maps give the best display and can be seen on the dash so I tend to use that for general driving. I find that the road closure information lags way behind Google maps though. The JLR maps will happily take you down a road that has been closed for 2 days. Because of this I always use Google maps for planning and if doesn't throw up any issues I drive with the JLR map. Realtime traffic is good enough with the JLR maps but if I have to cross a city in rush hour I tend to use Google for traffic. Defender D300 HSE 110 MY22 Pangea Green

This very good. It is a paid subscription, but not expensive. Crucially it doesn’t need a data connection to function. I find I’m always somewhere with no signal when I need to use Google maps. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |
