Thinking about installing an upgraded performance intercooler to my Puma 2.2 110, the only question is who's is best - Allisport, BAS, Alive or somebody else...
All claim that their product is better than the others, but has anybody done back to back testing? Any real solid evidence with numbers that X performs better than Y ? Trying to cut throught all the psudoscience and techtalk  to get to the core of the issue - which performs best. Zaid-M

not aware of any actual testing...
would just go with whoever I was gonna have map the car. think most of them have lifetime warranty's so check that, im happy with my alive one. |

I looked at this early this year - after discussing it with BAS, Pete talked me out of it (he was quite happy to sell me one!) since I only have a moderate tune and do not tow loads regularly. I stayed with a standard replacement. Rgds.

It’s because it’s pretty hard to prove much with intercoolers, you’re looking at rigging up pre and post ic temp probes to see the affect on intake air temp, but you also need to measure pressure drop and see the affect on the compressor range as well. Theres also core recovery time that has an huge effect on performance, thin aluminium end tanks don’t always fare as well as people think, a cast alloy ones are usually better. |

Big question is: has anyone had an unrated intercooler that has failed?
I think performance wise they're probably all good. (Not really a performance enhancer for me) I bought mine more for the fact the lr ones split. Like the hoses. |

I have a very good map and was told unless your thundering along in the desert or towing miles every day all day you won’t see much benefit from upgrading.

Also for me it wasn't about improved performance as I run stock tune, but purely about reliability. the LR standard one is weak, with the crimp join between the plastic ends and ally core. Mine came apart 500km from home and had to limp back towing a camper trailer. Went with a BAS one in the end. They were the only one I could get hold of without waiting multiple weeks for. It is a lot bigger than the standard, but what performance advantage it has I'm not sure, although when towing in the summer heat here it probably helps.

We run AlliSport intercoolers in our 90 and 110. Just personal preference.
Ultimately, they’re all roughly much the same. There are plenty of threads here discussing the matter, and you’ll be able to see some of the feedback for the various manufacturers. Frankly, if I had no brand loyalty, I’d go by cost out of the ones you’ve mentioned. I was hoping somebody had taken some time to evaluate a selection of Intercoolers, maybe not an individual but maybe a manufactuer or magazine? Again thanks all.  Zaid-M

Basically they are all similar, each performance intercooler will cool down the air better than the standard one. If it is an Allisport, a BAS or an other one, doesn´t matter that much. I talked to Pete (BAS) a while ago and we discussed a while about putting a performance intercooler in a moderate tuned TD4 2.4. (Stage1) He confirmed from his experience, that the standard intercooler is weaker. Putting a performance one in could be a good way to go as it helps with air flow and cooling, which increases the drivability even on a standard Puma. The cooling helps the car in a long term perspective for reliability and drivability. But all in all, changing is not a must do, if you use your Defender as a "normal" car. Anyway, I fittet a larger intercooler in the Puma, there is definitely a slight improvement. Engine (torque) is not really stronger, but under load the engine revs up noticeably better and more freely from below. What really would be interessting is a comparrison between the Allisport &Co and an eBay-performance-intercooler... Greetings,  Defender 110 TD5

I have the BAS hi flow and very pleased with it, had no issues over last 5 years. But have no experience of others. James
