It sounds like the lever needs adjusting a little to fully engage is all. Doubt it is anything to worry about internally.
The job involves removing the transmission tunnel and adjusting the pivot point a tad. Whilst you are down there make sure the linkage is not seized and grease it all up. |

Also check that the plastic cover (item no.2 on the attached picture) hasn't come out of its locating slots and is fouling on the lever mechanism preventing engagement. Its not held in by much more than gravity and the hopes and prayers of LR's engineers.
