Sorry, but I have to - only two words of advice:
1) the handbrake clatter hasn't done mine any harm after 8000 km (I have bought an X-Brake and will fit it towards the end of the warranty).
2) Complaining too loudly about "handbrake incompetence" to the dealer did my gearbox harm (or rather the mechanic did)

p.s. I find that giving the handbrake a quick yank can get rid of my embarrassment for a while  Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...
