P400e electric heater (Webasto 7kW) fault | |
I have a P400e PHEV that now has 5200km on the clock.
All P400e's are equipped with a Webasto 7kW electric heater, that can produce heat to the cabin when driving pure electric. The same heater can be used to precondition the car before driving.
Few weeks ago I noticed that when preconditioning the car, it was stone cold when I hopped in. I also noticed that occasionally the car fired up the combustion engine even when driving in EV mode. I began troubleshooting this, and noticed when I turned off the climate control fans the engine immediately stopped. And when restarting the fans, the engine restarted too. So, the car was producing cabin heat with the engine. Just like regular non-electrified cars do. There were no fault messages visible to the user.
I booked an appointment with the dealer. There was a diagnostics trouble code "High Voltage Heater - No Operations". They changed the heater unit under warranty, and now it works again as it should.
Luckily all Finnish-spec Defenders come standard with a fuel-burner heater (5kW Webasto) too, so I was able to leverage that to precondition the car.
So if any of you fellow PHEV drivers experience similar symptoms, your electric heater might be busted. 22MY Defender 110 P400e SE w/ Off-Road Pack, Driver Assist Pack, Cold Climate Pack, Comfort & Convenience Pack + ClearSight Rear-View Mirror & 11.4" Infotainment Screen
