Hi guys
I was driving from Johannesburg to Kwa Zulu Natal last week (highway all the way) which is approx 500 km. Half way through the journey my handbrake started to get hotter than usual and a lot of heat started generating around the base of the gear lever. My hand brake has always been warm to the touch but this time it was so hot it burnt my leg. the engine temp was dead centre on the gauge between hot and cold. Ive now noticed a dreaded knocking noise from the motor, almost like noisy tappets. Ive noticed when driving on long inclined roads the power starts dropping of which it never did. Has anybody ever had this happen to them? Land Rover's don't leak oil, they simply mark their territory! |

At a guess, One of your earths is shot and it's now using the handbrake cable as an earth.

Yep this has happened to me. Last time i was on the way back from the Alps and it got so hot I could not touch it without burning my fingers. It also popped the transfer box output seal and the rear diff input. I can't tell you how much heat was generated in the cabin, it was awful. I got land rover onto it as soon as I got back and asked for the transmission to be inspected but they did not and just said it was ok. Not much help to you I am afraid.

I agree about the smoke. I thought he was driving a defender though? the Ecu has it's own earth in the seat box. if it's starting ok though it definately isn't an earth fault. |
