Front Anti Roll Bar - a question.
A ‘just wondering’ post.

Whilst the DC was up on the ramp, I had a good look underneath. I noticed that I had a front anti roll bar that was considerably thicker than the rear version. Is this normal?

No complaints, as the DC handles like a dream compared to other 110s I’ve driven, indeed night and day. No wallowing whatsoever, so really happy.

But was just wondering…. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Yes thats completely normal. In part the extra thickness is to account for the weight of the engine.

Gotcha. Makes sense. I actually didn’t think Defs had front ARBs. Still wonder why my handles so much better. I drove my mate’s (Puma 2.4 SW with rack) and the wallowing a lightness in the front end was positively unnerving. I’d call it classic Defender handling. I appreciate his will have extra weight at the back, plus the rack as well, but the difference was amazing. Wonder what else it could be? We both run 18” wheels with BFG KO2s, but his are Sawtooths whilst mine are Bowlers (lighter), could that be it? I’ve also updated the damper to a Bilstein which has made everything much tighter.

Who knows? Interesting how different they can be. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Much more likely to be down to dampers and weight than wheels. Darren

Thicker front than rear bar is the usual approach, but there are Defender kits which use a thicker rear - presumably just about trying to make the handling balance more neutral rather than the usual heavy understeer (generally - additional front roll stiffness = more understeer; additional rear roll stiffness = more oversteer - the stiffer the bar, the more lateral load transfer).

The state of ARB bushes themselves do play a role as well when comparing one car to another.
I recently changed the bushes on both front and rear ARB's on my Puma 110 for Superpro ones, and it definitely helps keep the Defender more planted when cornering. Plus it's a cheap remedy against sea sickness in a Defender Laughing
Mind you, at the rear, the original conical ones at the axle side had partly melted (because of heat/friction?) with the bolts/washers, and the D shape ones at the chassis side were trying to escape from their bracket.
