..road tax based on cc..
..honestly speaking, i do not understand why vehicles with higher cc have to pay higher road tax..this is mostly related to my current situation where my Range Rover P38 has 25th birthday, which makes it qualified as a classic vehicle here, hence, 80% discount on to road tax. Little that i knew is..appart from vehicle age, one has to have 2 more vehicles in fleet to comply to 'classic' discount..what that has to do with discount is beyond me..and now i have to summon 3rd vehicle or cash out 6k+ RM for road tax (road tax+insurance). So im wondering, what the hell is reason to have such high road tax for larger cc engines, as reason im told is HP, which is joke, considering that engines today bursting HP's way over my P38 engine, with puny 1600cc, but paying fraction of my road tax... Pretty normal in fact for older vehicles, for example Luxembourg’s: “… either on the basis of CO2 emissions for M1 category passenger cars registered for the first time after 1 January 2001; or on the basis of the engine size for vehicles registered before 1 January 2001"

I feel your pain. It is the same in Ireland a 3ltr L322 is €1,800 to tax for a year plus to get a decent one you have to purchase in the UK and for the pleasure you have to pay a Vehicle Registration Tax to put it on the road here, a 2005 HSE Td6 with 150k on the clock will cost approx. €8,500 on top of the purchase price in the UK.

It's a shame we can't just tax based upon the amount of fuel used. Much simpler - we could call it 'fuel duty'. It would be impossible to evade and collected simply at the point of purchase.

Agree, also this means there will be no more zero road tax cars, I strongly disagree with this as its very unfair imo
Everyone should contribute if you drive a vehicle on public roads, irrelevant of its emissions

But how would you collect tax on electric vehicles? French system much simpler... no annual tax, rather a one-off at the time of purchase depending on CO2. Can be hefty though, compare a Mercedes E Class Coupé's 260 euro with a Defender's staggering (maximum) 30,000 euro.

Motorway tolls extra, of course, but in any case we will no doubt in future all be charged for road usage based on what and where we drive.

If there is zero tax on some road vehicles then it’s not really a road tax.

I spain they are trying to put a tax on road journeys like I. Portugal you pay for all roads per mile, so that and fuel tax, in theory will drive people to use the more fuel efficient cars.

The problem is the condition of the roads years ago they invested a lot to build new roads but have not maintained them so the locals don’t want to pay for them to be repaired as they say they should already be in a fit state. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

It's not, and never has been "road" tax. Roads are funded by councils, and paid for by council tax and other central govt funding.

It does indeed, either way nobody should pay 0 for rfl, it makes a mockery of the whole thing. My other half's car is 0, doesn't mean I agree with it.
