My 110 has developed a knock from the rear end. I have checked and found it's not the rear door or rear seats. It goes away in smooth tarmac but on normal roads I head a constable heavy tapping sound. I can't see anything loose in the suspension nor obvious damage to any bushes. The vehicle has an anti roll bar.
My mate has suggested it could be the A frame joint? Any ideas what it could be? It drives fine otherwise. Is it safe to drive? 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

The shock bushes are only a couple of years old but I did wonder if it was them as it seems to fit with how the dampers would act. They didn't last long in that case and seem to have suddenly failed. 2011 110 USW

Rear sway bar can flip on the 'wrong' side if the car was lifted recently and clash against the rear spring supports. m

Try the Panhard rod closest to the steering box.
You need someone else to wiggle the steering wheel left to right (engine off) whilst you watch the bush. Noises are sneaky little devils that like to move front to back and visa versa. Good luck |

Seems to me there aren't any defenders without some form of knock

I managed to check this without the other person. Just a phone. Camera on floor pointing up at the joint, press record wiggle wheel and check footage Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing. 5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

It is worth checking the rear body to chassis mounts as well. They should have bits of rubber between them. These squash and fall out. Go over a bump and the body knocks against the chassis mount.

Donโt forget the A frame link to chassis bushes as well as the ball joint.
This sounds like one of the three, one mine I replaced all three at once. It does sound A frame related, youโd an usually tell by pulling it around. No Guts, No Glory.

I had a knocking noise due to worn bushes from the rear shock absorbers.
