I think a set of drop gears bolted onto the ends of the axle tubes, in a gear casing, then the hubs bolted onto the lower end of the case Wink

How does the cv's and steering work then ? and how does the leverage not rip the axle tube round and must Censored the castor angles up as the centre of the wheels are lower than centre of the axles, as the axle goes down on the radius arms the castor will get worse.
I am going to have a rummage on the net got my tecnical brain going now need to find out more, hate it when i have more questions than answers in my head. I bet i was horrific as a child why? why? how does that work? etc etc. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

There they are - 'a set of drop gears bolted onto the ends of the axle tubes, in a gear casing, then the hubs bolted onto the lower end of the case' Laughing

I WANT A SET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Early 1200cc vw type 3? vans had a flipped diff (reversed rotation) and a set of reduction gears on the end of the rear axle tubes, when we stuck them on buggies and rails, the back end would lift on acceleration due to the torque reaction, I assume these have three gears so they still go forward. Thumbs Up

Many thanks for the web-link all clear in my head questions answerd now, caster on suspension droop will be an issue but only at high speed. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

No Worries - why will castor be affected at speed?

If the theorectical king pin (line between the top and bottom ball joints as I understand it), is just dropped down, what affects castor?

Centre of gravity will certainly be lifted, as will roll centre, although the wider track will help compensate for this.

Thanks Keith

Anyway propshafts/UJ`s (even a CV) would be at serious angle. Puma 110" SW

Propshafts are not affected as the axle casings are in the same place, the easiest way to explain castor is to visualise a shopping trolly, the wheel centre is behind the top bearing so that when you push the wheel trails. The king pin in one direction gives you camber and does not change as that is the centre of the wheel turning lock to lock the king pin inclanation gives castor angle the bottom of the king pin will be nearer the rear axle than the top, as the axle drops on its suspension the caster increases especially on raised vehicles, thats why you can get caster corrected radius arms (bent up at the front) or people cut axle tubes and re-weld them to correct the action of the lift, if the wheel centres are lower than the axle casing centre as per the portals as the suspension goes down the caster will be amplified.
The main problem with to much caster is poor turn in to corners ie understeer, if you over correct it to positive caster the car turns in nicely but steering won't self centre and has to held in a straight line worse and worse at higher speeds. no caster ie straight up and down king pins in both axis induces steering wobble if you hit a bump ie old series vehicles if you don't get the bearing preloads correct.
Clear as mud.
I will try and copy some of my old college paperwork there is also Ackerman linkage theroy, bump steer, king pin inclination, camber, caster, toe in toe out, Land Rover spends millions on all this just for us to do some cheap mods and screw it all up If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
