so for obvious reasons I have absolutely no faith in the adapter shaft not letting go just when you need it the most.
I'd also like to have an LS3 V8 at some point (but probably won't happen, but....) so it lead me to think could this be a 2 phase conversion. Is it possible to put a 6 speed manual tremec between the 2.4 puma and transfer box and then perhaps at a later date swap out the puma for an ls3 without having to swap out the gearbox and would the above do away with the adapter shaft? as they say anything is possible, BUT how practical is the above? |

Logically it has to come down to how likely you are to fit an LS3? If its a 50/50 then you could end up with a hefty bill for another (albeit nicer) 6 speed gearbox without much benefit.
If you're concerned about the output shaft then I'd suggest swapping that out for a one piece and getting good use out of the MT82/TDCi whilst you prepare for the LS3/Tremec swap. You could always fit the LS3 to the MT82 then save up for when you inevitably blow the MT82 up. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

that would be the more entertaining approach. looking for reliability tho. bottom line though - can it be done. ls3 to mt82? |

/\ got that wrong.
can any confirm if the mt82 can be 'swapped' out for the tremec 6 spd manual and do away with the adapter shaft? |

For a t56 to be converted the bill is £6,670.

in all honesty LS3 is a pipe dream....unless the puma gave up.
in the meantime I have absolutely no confidence in the adapter shaft not giving up at anytime and as such have would not consider planner a journey what I might be a little off piste - which is a little ironic considering what the defender is all about. hence the line of thought - can an t56 replace the mt82 / adapter shaft? my line of thought be ls3/t56 replaces - pumpa, mt82 and adapter shaft. plus I'm a step in the right direction should an ls3 ever become a possibility. |

No one has ever replaced the MT82 alone with a Tremec. It would be cheaper even if that was to work to just replace the output with an aftermarket unit.
There are companies that will make one off adaptors for stuff like that (you will need an adaptor for the engine as well as the transfer box keep in mind) but the cost will be sky high for a one off setup that probably won’t be very popular. The MT82 is pretty well proven with just the output being replaced and can take a good beating already comparatively. That’s only based on seeing a lot of high torque M57 conversions. 4.0 V8 Defender 90 My Instagram |

I agree in respect of the '82 being well proven - its just the pesky adapter shaft. I have zero confidence in it. I get it there are options out there to 'improve' on it but at present I'm reluctant to believe the entirely solve the problem. Yes they may only be a few hundred pounds to buy but when you consider the cost of the overall job ie incl labour it suddenly becomes quite a lump of cash. How exactly that compares to going down the route of a T56 (if thats even possible) is difficult to say - sure it'll be more but there will likely be a notable value associated with the sale of removed low mile mt82. most importantly the cost of peace of mind by having a proper solution to the adapter shaft - priceless. |

Here’s a thought to ponder. The output shaft failure is often attributed to misalignment between the gearbox and the transfer box. If it is your transfer box that is the problem then fitting a new gear box could have no effect at all on output shaft longevity. It’s probably worth clocking the output side of the gearbox to see whether the issue is there or not.
