Alternator light TD5
Hi folks I am a bit unsure where to go next. My defender TD5 (180000k) the alternator light came on quickly two days ago, no flickering, and has stayed on since. 14.6V on the alternator and 14.3V across the battery so its still charging. Any suggestions? What else could cause the light to stay on?

I ordered brushes, reg and rectifier to rebuild the unit but it'll take a month or so to get it all. Til then on the charger each night and my charged accessory battery on standby.

That voltage sounds a bit high for an older land rover, 13.5-14.0V is more typical and you might be trying your battery at that level. Do you know what voltage you were seeing before the fault?

Those voltages are fine on a TD5. Alternator does put out quite high voltages.

Suggest you check that there are no shorts in the wiring to the alternator.

Thanks gents. I was expecting 14.1 there abouts. I couldn't say I've been tracking it though earlier. Any places where a short is typical? Ill get into it after a reasonable clean up. I was just surprised it came on instantly and solid. No outstanding reasons I can think of.

Check for internal shorts in alternator. Side effect could be current consumption with ignition switched off, so be carefull not to destroy battery by too deep discharge. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
